There are winemakers who make wine. And there are winemakers who define regions. Philip Togni is the latter. Trained in Bordeaux under Émile Peynaud — the man who shaped the modern style of the Médoc — Togni arrived in Napa Valley in the late 1950s and began a career spanning 72 vintages and still going. Before establishing his own Spring Mountain estate, he was the winemaker behind the 1959 Mayacamas and the legendary 1969 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon — which received 100 points from Robert Parker and is widely regarded as one of the greatest California Cabernets ever produced.
When Philip Togni then built his own 25-acre estate at the top of Spring Mountain and began making Cabernet entirely from estate fruit, the result was something the wine world was not prepared for: a wine of such elegance, structure, and longevity that critics began calling it the Château Margaux of Spring Mountain. It has since bested top Bordeaux — Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion, and Mouton Rothschild — twice in official professional blind tastings. Not once. Twice.
The 2021 is the culmination of everything. When Decanter visited Philip and Lisa Togni at the estate in February 2024, Philip remarked that this vintage reminds him of St. Julien — the greatest commune in the Médoc. A man trained under Peynaud, comparing his own mountain Cabernet to the greatest wine region in the world. That is not marketing. That is a winemaker who knows exactly what he has made.

"How does this compare to a great Bordeaux First Growth?"
This is not a hypothetical question. Togni's Cabernet has beaten Château Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion, and Mouton Rothschild in two separate official professional blind tastings. Philip Togni trained under Émile Peynaud in Bordeaux — the man who defined the modern style of the Médoc — and brought that philosophy to Spring Mountain. The 2021 received 100 points from Decanter and 98+ from the Wine Advocate. Comparable First Growths in a comparable vintage cost $600–$1,200. The Togni is $228.99. The gap is not about quality.
"Should I open it now or cellar it?"
Every critic agrees: patience is rewarded. Wine Spectator says best from 2029, Wine Advocate says 2027, Vinous says 2031. This is a wine built for decades. Decanter scored it 95 points, noting "deeply mineral-tinged dark berries and black currants" with "coiled-up energy and tension." Drinking window runs through 2060.
