A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
In a small corner of Alsace, 11th-generation winemaker Nicolas Laugner is quietly breaking the rules. He uses the same méthode traditionnelle as the grand houses in Reims, with the second fermentation in the bottle. And he uses 100% Pinot Noir, the same noble grape behind the world’s most expensive rosé Champagnes.
So why is it $21.99? Because it’s grown a few miles outside a coordinate on a map. You aren’t paying for the multi-million-dollar marketing budgets of the big labels. You’re paying for the soil, the persistent bubbles and the craft.
James Suckling gave it 91 points: “Sleek and round-textured with fine bubbles and a chalky, mineral aftertaste.”

The Ultimate Endorsement
A Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier, two of the rarest credentials in wine, are both regulars at our shop. One of them buys three cases of this exact rosé every six weeks for their private cellar.

Here is where the pros are pouring this exact bottle:
At $21.99, a whole bottle from us costs less than a glass and a half at Zuni Café, and about a third of what Foreign Cinema and Nopa charge for the bottle.

Why This Matters
|
The Wine · JS 91
Allimant-Laugner Crémant d’Alsace Rosé.
100% Pinot Noir. Méthode traditionnelle. Our #1 sparkling for 18 years.
|
|
Domaine Allimant-Laugner Crémant d’Alsace Rosé NV
Alsace, France
A pure limestone Pinot Noir made the same way as the great Champagne houses make theirs: 12 to 18 months aging sur lattes, 4.1 grams per liter of residual sugar, salmon in color, with brioche and red-fruit aromas. Wonderful as an aperitif, and it holds its own with charcuterie, salmon or a berry dessert. Every review is below.

Also In The Cellar
Everyday Luxury Bargains.
The Rest of the Sparkling Shelf. Five more sparklings we love to open on a random Tuesday: two Champagnes, including a Premier Cru grower, two from Mendocino County, and a Crémant de Bourgogne from the village where the appellation was born.

Champagne · Premier Cru Fruit
M. Haslinger & Fils Brut Champagne.
Pinot Noir-led, from the Vallée de la Marne. As low as $28.97 a bottle by the case.
|
|
M. Haslinger & Fils Brut NV
Champagne, France
Named for the mother’s maiden name of Jean-Remy Rapeneau, a fourth-generation vintner of the Rapeneau family. The fruit comes from Premier Cru vineyards in the Vallée de la Marne, grown by the more than 100 small family growers of the Coopérative Vinicole Le Val-d’Or. White fruit, lemon and citrus on the nose; balanced vivacity on the palate, then a satisfying chalk finish. Over the past year it has been one of our two best-selling Champagnes.

Grower Champagne · Premier Cru

Champagne J. Lassalle “Cachet d’Or” Premier Cru Brut NV
Chigny-les-Roses · Champagne, France
A true grower: Maison J. Lassalle owns all of its vineyards, 11 hectares, all of them Premier Cru, on one terroir within 10 km of the farm. The Cachet d’Or is grown in Chigny-les-Roses from 60% Meunier, 20% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. The two highest reviews are below.

Scharffenberger Brut Excellence.

|
|
Scharffenberger Brut Excellence NV
Mendocino County, California
Bottle-fermented by the méthode traditionnelle, with about 12% reserve wine from a solera-style fractional blend in every non-vintage cuvée, and every bottle ages a minimum of 24 months on the lees before it leaves the winery. Tasting Panel: “A remarkable value with the poise and presence of wines twice the price.”

Scharffenberger Brut Rosé Excellence.

|
|
Scharffenberger Brut Excellence Rosé NV
Mendocino County, California
Scharffenberger has been making Mendocino sparkling wine since 1981, from 120 acres of its own vineyards plus trusted growers in the county, cooled by the Pacific. The color comes from adding four to five percent of Pinot Noir wine to the blend before the second fermentation in bottle.
|
Crémant de Bourgogne · Burgundy
Bailly-Lapierre Brut Réserve.
Four Burgundy grapes, aged in limestone caves under the village of Bailly.
|
|
Bailly-Lapierre Crémant de Bourgogne Blanc Brut Réserve NV
Burgundy, France
Bailly, as the producer puts it, is “the birthplace of the AOC Crémant de Bourgogne.” Since 1972 its wines have aged in an underground quarry, cellars hewn out of the limestone bedrock. This one blends the appellation’s four grapes, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay and Aligoté, and the producer calls it its easiest-drinking Crémant: clean, rounded and fresh.

And When You Need a Break
The Best Non-Alcoholic
We’ve Ever Tasted. We all need a break sometimes. Weingut Markus Huber’s Layla is a 0.0% sparkling from Austria, made from Gelber Muskateller, and we honestly wouldn’t have guessed it was non-alcoholic if the label didn’t tell us. Falstaff gave it 91 points.

The Bottom Line
18 years. Two Master-level palates.
One extraordinary $21.99 bottle. When the same bottle is our #1 sparkling seller for 18 years running, when a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier keep coming back to buy cases of it, and when San Francisco restaurants charge about three times our price for it, that wine has already made its case a thousand times over. This email is just the introduction, or the reminder.
Grab a bottle, grab the magnum, or explore the rest of the sparkling shelf, from $23.97 to $39.97. Either way, tonight’s dinner just got a little more celebratory.
Cheers,
— James Tran
