Most great Champagne houses have a flagship vintage. Krug has a flagship idea. When Joseph Krug founded the house in 1843, his radical premise was that the greatest possible Champagne could not be made from a single year. Instead, he argued, you would have to assemble it — carefully — from over a hundred individual wines, sourced from more than ten different vintages, blended every release. He called the result "the most generous expression of Champagne."
Six generations of the Krug family have honored that idea without compromise. The current release — Grande Cuvée 172ème Édition — is built around the 2016 base vintage and features 146 separately vinified wines from 11 years, the oldest of which is 1998. Cellared 8+ years, dosage just 4.5 g/L. Every major critic scored it 95 to 98.
