A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
On the night of October 3, thieves broke into Marchesi Antinori’s warehouse in Cortona, Tuscany, and drove off with about 30,000 bottles of the 2023 vintage: Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso, already packed for export. Two trucks, about three hours of loading, and they used the company’s own forklifts.
Fortune puts the haul at over $8 million at U.S. retail prices. Antinori’s Lorenzo Vivoli told Fortune, “It’s the biggest theft in the history of wine,” and, simply, “It’s a blow to the heart.”
Part of that shipment was bound for the United States. As of this writing, no arrests have been reported and none of the wine has turned up. Renzo Cotarella of Antinori told the AP: “We are informing our clients around the world and asking them to pay attention to any offers outside the official channels.”
Ours Was Stateside, And Safe
And no, officer, it wasn’t us.
Our allocation of the 2023 Tignanello came through the official channel and was already stateside and safe, and it lands tomorrow. We want to show our support for the Antinori family the best way we know how: by getting this glorious vintage into your cellar, at our best price.
Perhaps The Greatest Tig
Decanter’s James Button gave the 2023 96 points and called it “perhaps the greatest Tig I’ve ever tasted.” Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling both gave it 97. Dunnuck: “It’s long, luxurious, and beautifully balanced,” a vintage “with the backbone to age for decades while already offering immediate appeal.”
Antonio Galloni at Vinous summed up its style in four words: “It’s finesse over power.”
The Wine That Changed Tuscany
Tignanello was the first Sangiovese aged in small oak barrels, the first modern red to use non-traditional varieties like Cabernet in the blend, and among the first reds from the Chianti Classico area made without white grapes. It took the name Tignanello in 1971.
It is bottled only in favorable vintages. There was no Tignanello in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992 or 2002.
The Rest Of The Family
Below the 2023 you will find the last of the family’s other treasures on our shelves: the last 2 magnums of the 2020 Tignanello; the last bottles of the Marchese Antinori Riserva, the wine James Suckling calls “Baby Tignanello,” in 2021 and 2022; the last 3 bottles of the 2022 Solaia, plus a single 3.0-liter bottle of the 2018; and Guado al Tasso, the third wine on the stolen list, with its younger sibling, Cont’Ugo.

The 2023 summer was hot and dry, with no extreme heat spikes; moderate August rain and a normal September and October carried the fruit to peak ripeness. Sangiovese picking began around September 20, and the Cabernet was in by mid-October. Every review is below, highest score first.
Jeb Dunnuck · Audrey Frick
97 Points
The 2023 Tignanello pours a saturated, youthful red/purple hue and is deeply layered and expressive, with pure aromas of black cherry liqueur, fresh blackberry, lavender, forest herbs, polished cedar, and fresh earth. Full-bodied, it floats across the palate with supple, approachable fruit that beautifully balances the structure. A refreshing spine of acidity, refined, even tannins, and a long, seamless finish give the wine both precision and length… this is a vintage with the backbone to age for decades while already offering immediate appeal. It’s long, luxurious, and beautifully balanced. Drink 2027-2057. May 2026
James Suckling
97 Points
Dark and profound wine of great precision, vibrant cassis, graphite and cedar wood, very balsamic with eucalyptus and camphor. Full-bodied with weight and substance on the mid-palate. It shows an elegant attack with velvety tannins, refreshing acidity and long graphite depth. Drink or hold.
Decanter · James Button
96 Points
Described by the winemaking team as a balanced year set up by a rainy May which restored water reserves in the stony soil, Tignanello 2023 is a vivacious experience; perhaps the greatest Tig I’ve ever tasted. Vibrant crushed berries, intense dark cherries, macchia and perfumed lavender hum along to the tune of the incisive acidity which extends and refreshes. Drinking Window: 2026-2043. June 2026
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
95 Points
The 2023 Tignanello is a classy, polished wine. Soft and open-knit with lovely, forward fruit and bright acids, the 2023 is a total delight. Floral, spice and blood orange overtones meld into a core of red Sangiovese-driven fruit. There’s a touch more Cabernet Franc in this year’s blend. That comes through in the wine’s aromatic presence. The 2023 is a juicy, midweight Tignanello that offers tons of immediacy and sheer appeal. It’s finesse over power. Drink: 2031-2048. April 2026

Cherry, black currant, violet, mineral, vanilla and toasty oak aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this polished, complex red. Shows terrific balance and intensity, while a cascade of fruit and spices infuses the aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2028 through 2047. July 2026

Two bottles in one, from a hot 2020 summer with no extreme heat events. Antonio Galloni: “The balance here is just sublime.” Here are its top two reviews.
James Suckling
97 Points
Violets and lavender with dark fruit and hints of dark chocolate. Sophisticated nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannin structure that gives this finesse and beauty. It’s very long and goes on for minutes. Precision. July 2023
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
96 Points
The 2020 Tignanello is so primary, so intensely fruit-driven, that it almost tastes like a barrel sample. A burst of red Sangiovese fruit opens first, followed by hints of blood orange, cinnamon, spice, dried flowers and mocha develop later. Time in the glass brings out striking dimensions. In 2020, Tignanello is wonderfully sleek and racy, with fine tannins that lie below a core of bright, sculpted fruit. The balance here is just sublime. I can’t wait to revisit the 2020 with age. This ripe style is fresh and harmonious, delivering plum, cherry and boysenberry fruit, with accents of earth, iron and eucalyptus. Supple in texture, with a beautifully integrated structure and long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2043. July 2024

Impressive cherry and berry fruit with hints of cedar and dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied, firm and bright with a long, nicely tannined finish. This can age, but I like the tension and drive to this now. Baby Tignanello. Sangiovese with 10% cabernet. Drink or hold.

Since 2011 the Marchese Antinori has come from the grapes of the Tignanello estate. Wine Advocate: “It shows that Tignanello signature, given that fruit comes from the same estate as the flagship Tignanello.” Here are its top two reviews.

A youthful wine with aromas of esters, strawberries, red cherries, violets, roses, licorice and toast. The palate is gorgeous, with ripe, vibrant and velvety tannins, tight-knit acidity, a medium to full body and a crisp, super-savory finish. Drinkable now, but best in one to two years. March 2025
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
93 Points
The 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is terrific. Soft and pliant, with fabulous balance, the 2022 is a total charmer. Antinori’s style today, one that favors a lighter hand than in the past, works so well here. Succulent red cherry, spice, new leather and rose petal are front and center. All of this fruit is from Antinori’s Tignanello property. It captures all the essence of site in a more approachable style that is undeniably appealing. July 2025

The sunniest part of the Tignanello hillside is home to the 20-hectare Solaia vineyard. The family first made Solaia in 1978, and makes it only in exceptional vintages. Here are its top two reviews.
James Suckling
98 Points
More elegant than powerful and more approachable than usual, with stunning concentration and complexity. Aromas of subtle cassis, toast, herbs and a refreshing balsamic touch. Firm on the palate, with a full body, velvety texture and moderate acidity but not at the expense of its great balance. Sleek, polished aftertaste with sweet tobacco flavors. May 2025
Decanter · James Button
98 Points
The drought and heat of 2022 pushed vines in Tuscany to their limits, and the outcome in many cases are wines of density and concentration but with a vein of freshness – and that’s exactly what we see here in the 2022 Solaia. It opens with cool aromas of damp earth, woodland berries, red fruit coulis and a waft of balsamic herbs. In the mouth it is immediately very fleshy, almost voluptuous but holding its shape. Balsam-infused black cherry and dark berries are deepened by chocolatey wood, while succulent acidity brings out the top end and leads to a long, bright, energetic and fresh finish which is full of promise for the future. A single 3.0-liter bottle of the 2018 Solaia, four standard bottles in one. James Suckling: “This is the smallest production of Solaia ever.” Here are its top two reviews.
Vinous · Antonio Galloni
98 Points
The 2018 Solaia continues to develop beautifully. Resonant and ample on the palate, with tons of vibrancy, the 2018 offers terrific vibrancy as well as character. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, blackberry jam, licorice and spice build as the Solaia gains momentum over time. The 2018 is dense and beautifully layered, yet retains the mid-weight structure of this super elegant vintage. (Drink between 2026-2043) July 2022
Decanter · Aldo Fiordelli
98 Points
This Solaia opens up with restrained bramble fruits, meaty hints, clove and dark chocolate framed with balsamic notes. The attack is full and soft with lively acidity, focused on the vibrancy of Cabernet Sauvignon from Chianti, with impressively refined tannins. Polished and concentrated, it finishes with an amazing salty persistency… Drinking Window: 2022-2045. November 2021

Expressive, yet classy rather than flamboyant, this red reveals black currant, blackberry, plum, cedar, vanilla, coffee and graphite aromas and flavors. Builds in intensity midpalate… Superb. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2029 through 2048. 2,250 cases imported.
