A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
In August I offered you the 2019 Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet. Today it is the bottle Dunn collectors wait for: the 2021 Howell Mountain, from the vintage critics are calling Napa’s greatest in a generation.
Antonio Galloni called it “one of the most polished young wines I have ever tasted from Dunn.” Wine Advocate found “tremendous length and ample harmony.” We have 24 bottles, they arrive this Friday, and at $194.99 this is the lowest price in the country. They will sell out.
2021 · The Vintage
Napa’s greatest vintage in a generation.
After the devastating 2020 season, when wildfires forced many producers to forgo red wine entirely, 2021 arrived as an answer to prayer. Cool nights, steady sunshine, no heat spikes, and historic drought conditions produced small, intensely concentrated berries that critics now call a once-in-a-generation event.
James Suckling calls 2021 an “apex vintage” and a “redemption year,” urging collectors to commit now because of the small quantity available. Jeb Dunnuck declared it “truly exceptional.” Vinous found the wines “aromatic, refined and wonderfully expressive.”
The Napa Valley Vintners’ one-line summary: “The joy is back.”
The Family That Defined Howell Mountain
In 1975, a young UC Davis enology graduate named Randy Dunn took a job at a small Rutherford winery called Caymus. Over the next decade he created the wines that put Caymus on the map, including the 1984 Special Selection that Wine Spectator named its Wine of the Year. Then he left the valley floor for Howell Mountain, where he had quietly purchased 14 acres of Cabernet vines back in 1978. His first Dunn Vineyards wine, 660 cases of it, came off the mountain in 1979.
Randy and Lori Dunn have owned and run Dunn Vineyards ever since. Randy, with Bill Smith and a few other growers and winemakers, proposed and defined the Howell Mountain AVA. Its boundary starts at 1,400 feet, so when the valley floor is cool and foggy, the mountain is sunny and breezy. Robert Parker: “In top vintages the Howell Mountain is one of the great wines, not just of California, but of the world.”
It is still a family affair: Randy’s son Mike joined in 1999, and since 2023 Ted Kizor has made the wine in tandem with the Dunns.
The Most Polished Dunn Yet
Antonio Galloni put it best: the 2021 is “one of the most polished young wines I have ever tasted from Dunn,” with Howell Mountain’s tannin and acid “totally woven into the wine’s heady, luxurious fabric.” Jeb Dunnuck found “a Pauillac-like nose of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil notes.” Decanter reached for the old line about “iron fist in a velvet glove.”
Wine Spectator found “lovely polish and freshness”; Wine Advocate, a wine that “finishes with tremendous length and ample harmony.” James Suckling: “Very bold and generous, with a refined structure that will age gracefully.”
24 Bottles Of 2,583 Cases
Wine Spectator counts 2,583 cases made, for the whole world. Our allocation is 24 bottles, arriving this Friday. Elsewhere it runs $225, $250 and $300; ours is $194.99, the lowest price in the country.
Drink one in a few years and lay the rest down. Jeb Dunnuck: “Give bottles 7-8 years if you can and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades.” These will sell out, and when they do, the next bottles come from the auction market.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in stainless steel and aged up to 32 months in 100% new French oak, exactly as Dunn has done it since 1979. Every review is below, highest score first.

98+ Points
A deeper, richer, more powerful wine, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain sports a deep ruby/plum hue to go with a Pauillac-like nose of blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil notes. It’s full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, has the classic Howell Mountain tannic structure, and a gorgeous finish. Give bottles 7-8 years if you can and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades. (Drink between 2032-2063) January 2025
James Suckling
98 Points
Robust and brooding aromas of mulberry bush, violets, cedar, cocoa and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with refined tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of blackcurrants, spices, tobacco leaves and crushed river stones. Very bold and generous, with a refined structure that will age gracefully. Drinkable now, but best from 2028. Drink or hold. December 2024
Decanter · Jonathan Cristaldi
98 Points
The colour of the Howell Mountain Cabernet is noticeably darker than the Napa Valley bottling, showcasing an incredibly intense, mineral-driven profile. The tannins have an ironstone-like quality—firm, structured, and reminiscent of that “iron fist in a velvet glove” metaphor. The palate has remarkable density, balanced by a pure, vibrant mix of tart red berries and black cherries. The tannins become more assertive, but as they gradually soften, a rush of juicy blood orange acidity emerges. The wine carries intriguing layers of sagebrush, cedarwood, and warm brown spices, delivering ample power and complexity… Drinking Window: 2028-2050. August 2024

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is one of the most polished young wines I have ever tasted from Dunn. Blackberry, graphite, crushed rocks, lavender, espresso, licorice and spice saturate the palate. There’s plenty of Howell Mountain tannin and acid, but in 2021, those elements are totally woven into the wine’s heady, luxurious fabric. Even so, I would not plan on opening a bottle any time soon. The 2021 spent 31 months in 100% new French oak, pretty much the norm here. What a wine! (Drink between 2029-2051) December 2024

97 Points
This displays the dark, dense fruit of the AVA, but there’s lovely polish and freshness, with violet and ink notes pulling along the core of dark currant and blackberry fruit. Offers a ramrod of licorice and tar on the finish but shows the cut and drive to match its heft. A late flash of sweet bay adds an alluring hint. Patience is required, though. Best from 2028 through 2045. 2,583 cases made. July 2025
Wine Advocate · Joe Czerwinski
96 Points
Dunn’s 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is richer, denser and more concentrated than the Napa Valley bottling but still hits the winery’s hallmark notes of cedar, cassis, blueberries, pine needles and rubbed sage. It’s medium to full-bodied, weighing in at just under 14% alcohol, but the tannins are ripe and relatively silky, and the wine finishes with tremendous length and ample harmony. Drinking Window: 2028-2050. October 2024
