A Personal Note
Dear Artisans, Every region has one producer whose entry wine embarrasses everyone else’s flagship. In Rioja, that producer is Marqués de Murrieta. The new Reserva 2022 just collected five scores between 94 and 95 from Decanter, Tim Atkin, the Wine Advocate, James Suckling and Vinous, and Suckling summed up the wine in one word we would put on the label if we could: “impeccable.” This should surprise no one. This is the house whose Castillo Ygay 2010 was Wine Spectator’s No. 1 Wine of the Year in 2020, out of every wine on earth. The same 741-acre Ygay estate in Rioja Alta, the same cellars founded in 1852, the same family that has run it since 1983. The Reserva is where that pedigree starts, at a price that reads like a misprint.
The Reserva 2022 arrives this Friday, August 28th. Order now and it comes off the truck with your name on it: $33.99 a bottle, $31.99 at six, and $29.99 by the case. Hand-harvested off the Ygay estate, fermented plot by plot, then given 25 months in American oak, which is roughly double what most wineries give bottles at twice this price. Vinous calls the entry-level Murrieta “among Rioja’s finest values” and drinks the 2022 out to 2050. This is the house wine of people who know exactly what things are supposed to cost.
