A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

Method comes from Master Sommelier Ian Cauble, whom you may know from the Somm films, and winemaker Trevor Sheehan. They started it in 2016 with one idea: make a Napa Cabernet in the shape of the Bordeaux they love — and sell it for a price so low that someone might even skip over.

The fruit comes from two parcels: one in western Oakville, one a mile north of St. Helena just east of Highway 29. Ian cannot tell you the names of either. Both growers sell their fruit to labels you would recognise instantly, at prices that would end this email — and the contracts forbid him from saying so out loud. His own words: sites "whose names we can't share due to NDAs, but whose pedigree becomes obvious the moment the cork is pulled."

That is the whole trick. You are not buying a lesser vineyard. You are buying the same dirt without the name on the label, which is the only part of a Napa Cabernet that has ever been cheap to leave off.

We have sold seventy cases of this wine.

Mostly to the same people, over and over.

That is the number I actually pay attention to. Anyone can sell a case of something once. Eight hundred and forty bottles, largely to customers who came back for a second and third round, is a different signal entirely. It is a house wine that happens to score 95 points.

Ian sells it directly for $30. We are at $22.97, which is the lowest price in the country, and we have been allotted a final ten cases. When those are gone the 2023 is finished for us.

"Taste it blind against bottles three to five times the price and you wouldn't ever guess it is out of place."

Method Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 Napa Valley bottle
80% Cabernet Sauvignon · 10% Merlot · 10% Petit Verdot · 14.5% Alcohol

Fully destemmed, fermented in small lots, raised in French oak. Ian describes a deep core of black cherry and cassis, graphite, warm sage, cocoa dust, and what he calls that unmistakable valley-floor aroma seasoned Napa drinkers recognise on sight. Give it twenty minutes in a decanter and a Bordeaux glass. Drinking now through 2030.

95 Points

"The blackberry, dark-chocolate, walnut and blueberry aromas are so attractive. It's medium-bodied with fine, velvety tannins and a long and firm-tannin finish. Just the right amount of tension at the end. Shows the beauty of the 2023. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Drink or hold." Jul 2025

"Opulent, rich flavor, and a silken mouthfeel drive the indulgent appeal of this Cabernet Sauvignon. Flavors of mixed berry pie, with a bright burst of cranberry, and a drizzle of dark chocolate fill the palate. Fine while ample tannins will continue to improve over the next few years." Elaine Chukan Brown, Nov 2025

Why This One Keeps Coming Back
Two NDA vineyards, not a bulk blend. Western Oakville and just north of St. Helena. The growers sell to labels you know — the contracts are the only reason you cannot read their names on this bottle.
Seventy cases out the door, mostly on repeat. Our customers do not buy this once. They buy it, drink it, and come back for more, which is the only review that costs a person anything to write.
A Master Sommelier put his own name on it. There are a few hundred Master Sommeliers on earth. One of them makes this wine and sells it on his own site for $30, which tells you what he thinks it is worth.
Ten cases, and then nothing. This is the final allotment of the 2023 released to us. There is no reorder behind it.
The Bottom Line

The other 95-point 2023 Napa Cabs
start at three hundred dollars.

Same vintage, same valley, same score from the same critic. Method at $22.97, from two vineyards nobody is allowed to name, made by a Master Sommelier, and already bought seventy cases deep by people in this room. Ten cases left and no more coming.

Cheers,

— James Tran
