A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
Wine Enthusiast has just named the 2023 Kosta Browne Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir #7 on its Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2026, with 97 points. Owen Bargreen gave it 96 and said it best: “A show-stopping new Pinot Noir.”
Our allocation is 18 bottles, arriving Tuesday, November 3rd. At $149.99 we are the lowest price in the country; everywhere else it is $170. Eighteen bottles of a Top 100 Pinot at that price will sell out, so reserve yours today and we will hold it for you the day it lands.
A Mountainside That Takes Its Time
Gap’s Crown sits in the Petaluma Gap, a cool corner of the Sonoma Coast where, in the winery’s words, “the fog rolls in, the wind keeps moving, and ripening happens slowly.” The vineyard is 114 acres on a slope that climbs 900 feet over rocky Goulding soils, and 37 of those acres are dedicated to Kosta Browne, which has worked with the site since 2006.
The 2023 comes from five clones, including the prized Swan, fermented in concrete and wood and aged 16 months in French oak. Winemaker Julien Howsepian: “What sets Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir apart is the concentration, texture and weight. It has a profound impact on people when they taste it.”
The Vineyard Behind A Wine Of The Year
Dan Kosta and Michael Browne were waiters who pooled their tips to start making wine in 1997. Their 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir became Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2011, and Gap’s Crown was one of its three vineyards. Fifteen years later, the same hillside has put Kosta Browne on a year-end Top 100 again.
Six Critics, 93+ To 97
Wine Enthusiast’s Tom R. Capo calls it “one of Sonoma’s most prized parcels” and adds, “Delicious now, this will age seamlessly for a decade or more.” Owen Bargreen and Wine Review Online gave it 96, Jeb Dunnuck 95 and Wine Advocate 94, and Antonio Galloni of Vinous found “a very nicely restrained wine from this site that has a tendency to lean exuberant.”
The Last 12 Bottles Of The Sonoma Coast
Kosta Browne’s 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir draws on the same hillside: Owen Bargreen notes it “comes from mainly the Gap’s Crown and Marshall Vineyards,” and gave it 95, with 94s from Jeb Dunnuck and Wine Enthusiast. We have the last 12 bottles at $79.99, the lowest price in the country; everywhere else it runs $90 to $115.

Vibrant aromas of cranberry, pomegranate, cut flowers, and toasty spices pop from the glass on the nose of this Pinot from one of Sonoma's most prized parcels. The palate gives plush tannin and supple acidity, featuring flavors of concentrated black cherry, plum, cocoa, cinnamon, and roses across a minute long finish. Delicious now, this will age seamlessly for a decade or more. September 2026

A show-stopping new Pinot Noir, the 2023 Kosta Browne ‘Gap’s Crown Vineyard’ Pinot Noir comes from this site that neighbors the Pacific Ocean. This wine was sourced from ten vineyard blocks and it comes off plush and mineral-laden on the tongue. A gorgeous melange of red and dark fruits greets you alongside salty and rocky soils and plenty of mouth-watering acidity. A joy to consume now, enjoy over the next fifteen plus years. Drink 2026-2041.

Forward cherry cola notes are accented with delicate undertones of dry and damp earth as well as silky texture with a dash of vanilla added to the fruit. A silky texture carries you to a finish where lively acidity gives a solid push to the flavors, and they linger together in a way you will want to keep revisiting. This is beautiful now and will gain complexity for 10 years before starting a beautiful fade. A blend of Swan, 667, 114, 115 and 828 clones. August 2026

Medium red in color, the 2023 Pinot Noir Gap’s Crown Vineyard is understated yet charming, with cherries, leather, baking spice, and fresh earth. Medium-bodied, approachable, and elegant, with fine tannins and weightless length, it may need some time to fully express its potential but should drink beautifully over the coming decade. Drink 2026-2038.

Matured for 16 months in 46% new French oak, the 2023 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard has intense aromas of cranberry, blackberry, mossy bark, mushrooms, tea leaves and floral perfume. The full-bodied palate features concentrated yet detailed, spicy flavors. It has a seamless frame of silky tannins and vibrant acidity and a very long, perfumed finish. September 2025

The 2023 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown is tightly wound today as it slowly reveals shades of dark cherry, cedar, iodine, black tea and chalk. There's a real feeling of palpable grip and super-polished tannin that portends positive evolution down the road. Subtle acids brighten the finish, which is a little taut today but should unfurl nicely with time. The inclusion of some concrete in fermentation works well to preserve freshness. It's a very nicely restrained wine from this site that has a tendency to lean exuberant. Drink between 2026-2033.

Powerful and heady, with serious texture, the 2023 Kosta Browne ‘Sonoma Coast’ Pinot Noir comes from mainly the Gap’s Crown and Marshall Vineyards. It is loaded with sea salt dusted red fruits that mingle well with tobacco and orange peel notes. Showing outstanding weight and length, enjoy now and over the next fifteen years. Drink 2026-2041.

The nose of this Pinot jumps with aromas of concentrated Bing cherry, plum and dark cocoa, while the palate displays generous tannin balanced by zippy acidity and flavors of berry coulis, sandalwood and shiitake. Rest this in the cellar for 5-10 years and drink with roasted pork and mushrooms.

A youthful medium red hue, the 2023 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast reveals nutmeg, pomegranate, wildflowers, blue fruit, and brambly earth. Slightly lush in texture, with excellent length and balanced tannins, drink it over the coming 12-15 years. (2026-2041)
Vinous

The 2023 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is open-knit, plush and very nicely built. A surprising amount of graphite minerality opens first, lending complexity to the concentrated yet weightless dark berry fruit and subtle tea-like tannins. Finessed, polished and expressive, the 2023 boasts the hallmark Kosta Browne supple, velvety texture. All the elements come together effortlessly.
Wine Advocate

The 2023 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast was matured for 16 months in 40% new French oak. It has slowly opening scents of wild berry fruit, tobacco, black tea, violet and bitters. The full-bodied palate features expressive, layered flavors. It’s framed by silky tannins and vibrant acidity and has a long, spicy finish. (2025-2035)
Wine Spectator
92 Points
Gentle and caressing feel, this offers warmed raspberry and black cherry compote notes, along with hints of anise and black tea. The finish shows a lightly toasted edge.
