A Personal Note
Hey Artisans,
I poured this wine last Friday for folks in the store and the room went wild. We presold it on the spot.
It is Louis Jadot’s 2022 Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Ursules, a legendary monopole, in the rare 375 mL half bottle: 97 points from Wine Review Online, 96 from James Suckling, and #95 on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2025. There are only 40 half bottles coming tomorrow.
Rarer Than The 750
Only 200 cases of the 750 mL were imported. Less than that came in for this rare 375 mL size, which was reserved for Michelin-star restaurant wine lists.
The Half Bottle Premium, Reversed
Normally you would always pay a premium for a 375 mL, because the bottling costs are the same as a 750 mL, if not more.
Today it is the opposite. The 750 mL is $145, and half of that is $72.50. Our half bottle is $64.99. You are saving on a gorgeous, legendary Premier Cru monopole that is Top 100 ranked and drinkable now.
Half Bottles Are Time Travel
The wine develops faster in a half bottle: half the volume, but the same oxygen transfer rate through the cork.
That matters here. Critics counsel patience with this wine (Wine Spectator says best from 2029), and yet Michael Apstein already writes “as delicious as it is now.” What you get in the half bottle is a stunning, sublime, epic red Burgundy to enjoy anytime.
The Vineyard That Came Before The House
“Before there was Maison Louis Jadot, there was Clos des Ursules.” That is how Wine Spectator opens its tasting of what it calls “the legendary Pinot Noir.” The family acquired this vineyard in 1826, and it came to Louis Henry Denis Jadot as a dowry in 1859, the year he founded the house. This year it turns 200, and it remains the flagship of Jadot.
It is a walled vineyard of a little over two hectares, mid-slope and facing east, named for the Ursuline nuns of Beaune who once held it. It is a monopole: Jadot alone makes this wine. Since 2011 it has carried its own Premier Cru name on the label.
Jadot treats it accordingly. Look at this table of Clos des Ursules, 1915 to 2022:
A long table of Louis Jadot Beaune Clos des Ursules bottles, vintages 1915 to 2022, with three men smiling beside it in a stone hall
Beaune Clos Des Ursules · Louis Jadot · 1915 To 2022
Anniversary dinners have run in London and Burgundy this year. Bruce Sanderson of Wine Spectator tasted 15 vintages back to 1929. Michael Apstein was at a tasting of 30. Neal Martin of Vinous tasted this very 2022 “at the Clos des Ursules vertical at the Jadot winery in Beaune.”
Winemaker Frédéric Barnier believes the 2022 should be “on the podium.” Apstein’s verdict: “I believe it deserves a gold.”

Maison Louis Jadot, one of Burgundy’s best négociants, is a major grower, owning, through their various estates, over 300 acres of vineyards in the Côte d’Or. Clos des Ursules was the first vineyard Maison Louis Jadot acquired two hundred years ago, in 1826. The French wine authorities awarded Clos des Ursules, which was formerly included in the Vignes Franches 1er Cru, its own 1er Cru status in 2011 because of the distinctive quality of the wine. The sensational 2022 … Frédéric Barnier, Jadot’s winemaker, using an Olympic analogy, believes the 2022 should be “on the podium.” I believe it deserves a gold. It was marvelous when I initially tasted in Jadot’s cellars in 2023 and has just gotten better with more complexity and elegance each of the several times I’ve tasted since then. Though nicely concentrated – yet not overdone – it impresses with its elegance and silky texture. It displays the magical combination of power and elegance. Having just been lucky to be included in a tasting of 30 vintages of Clos des Ursules, back to the 1926, this is a wine that develops and evolves beautifully, so, as delicious as it is now, there is no rush to drink the 2022. It will develop with the best of them. July 2026

A big, rounded and generous wine that wraps fine-grained tannins around gorgeous red and black fruit on a full body. … Opens with spicy cinnamon, cloves and toast, then vivid raspberries, red plums and mint on the palate. Drink or hold.

Fresh purple of medium depth. Much the liveliest bouquet with its concentration of raspberries, very complete and absolutely delicious. The finish continues gorgeously, this will make a beautiful bottle with a little patience. This Clos des Ursules shows the classic peacock’s fantail of aromatics. Drink from 2030-2038. October 2023

Pure and bursting with energy and tension, this red's cherry, blackberry, floral and mineral flavors are locked tight today. Nonetheless, this offers terrific balance and intensity, with just a hint of oak spice. The long, resonant aftertaste is driven by vibrant acidity. Shows excellent potential. Best from 2029 through 2047. 200 cases imported.

The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with sweet, powdery tannins and a long, spicy finish, this site, an enclave in Vignes Franches that's one of the house's emblematic wines, always performs well. Here the elegant and wonderfully spicy nose offers up its layered blend of ripe red berries, soft earth and hint of oak. The rich and beautifully textured middle weight flavors are blessed with refined tannins and fine length on the youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is lovely and sufficiently firm to reward up to a decade of keeping. Drink starting 2032. April 2025

The wine has abundant extract on the palate, giving the wine complexity and depth. I suggest waiting at least five years to see if this opens up. Drinking Window: 2027-2055. November 2023

The 2022 Beaune Clos des Ursules 1er Cru has quite a gorgeous bouquet with bright Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and plummy scents, fruit-forward (of course), yet well defined and showing no sign of heat. The palate is medium-bodied with a splash of balsamic on the entry, gentle grip and hints of graphite on the mid-palate, leading to a controlled and quite persistent finish. Afford this another three or four years in bottle. Tasted at the Clos des Ursules vertical at the Jadot winery in Beaune. Drinking Window: 2030-2055. July 2026
