Unfathomable values from the bodega that won Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year.
CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) — founded 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, still run by the family five generations later — and home to the legendary Imperial Gran Reserva that Wine Spectator named the #1 wine in the world.
|
|
Dear Wine Lover,
In 1879, two brothers named Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa founded a wine company in the town of Haro in northern Spain. They called it Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España — CVNE for short, pronounced "Coo-nay" by the family. A century and a half later, the company is still in their family's hands — now under fifth-generation CEO Victor Urrutia Ybarra — and its wines are still made in the same century-old cellars in Haro.
CVNE is one of Spain's most decorated houses. Its Imperial Gran Reserva — only made in exceptional vintages, aged for years in the bodega's cellars before release — was famously named Wine Spectator's #1 Wine of the Year, the only Spanish wine ever to capture the top spot on the magazine's Top 100 list. We have one bottle of the 2017 Imperial Gran Reserva in stock right now (JS 98 / DM 95 / VM 94). And we have three more CVNE wines at prices that, in a fair world, would not exist.
A 5-critic-91-to-92-point Reserva from $19.99 a bottle at the case tier. An Imperial Reserva that earned 94-94-94 across three majors at $49.99. The last bottle of a 98-point Gran Reserva at $99.97. A 1915-registered Blanco at $14.97. There was a total feeding frenzy for these wines at last weekend's tasting.

"A juicy and bright Rioja with ripe, fresh plums, cherries, stones, sweet spices and tobacco. Textbook, medium-bodied palate with juicy, plummy fruit and fine-grained tannins. Fairly long and tightly wound finish. Energetic and pretty refined. Vegan."

"A harmonious version that integrates creamy-edged tannins and orange peel acidity with a lovely range of baked cherry, fig cake, dried thyme and warm brown bread. Lightly chewy and lingering on the finish."

"A tight, structured Rioja with blackcurrants, sandalwood, coffee and cassis on the nose, followed by a chewy, toasty and medium- to full-bodied palate. Firm, dusty tannins. Compact."

"Beautiful nose with lifted herbal notes hovering over the lush black and blue fruit. Tannins are fresh and well presented lending fluidity to the fruit. The mineral backbone as further support to the framework. An alluring, long finish of zesty citrus married with herbal intensity."

CVNE · The Wine That Was #1 in the World
Cune Imperial Gran Reserva DOC 2017
85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo · "Only made when harvests are exceptional"
CVNE's flagship. The Imperial Gran Reserva is only released in exceptional vintages — this 2017 was harvested by hand, fermented with indigenous yeasts in small oak vats, malolactic in concrete, then aged for two years in French and American oak before resting in CVNE's century-old cellars until release. James Suckling scored it 98 points. Decanter 95. Vinous 94. And it is the only Spanish wine ever to be named #1 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list (the 2004 Imperial Gran Reserva, vintage of the century in Rioja). We have one bottle of the 2017 left.

"A very structured and gorgeous Rioja with blackberry, cherry, cedar and spice aromas and flavors. Hints of toasted oak underneath. Granite, too. Medium-bodied, yet the structure builds on the palate, giving superb length and power. Give it three to five years to come together, and beyond."

95 Points · Decanter · Ines Salpico · Drink 2025–2045
"A bit coiled upon opening, this opens slowly in the glass, revealing beautiful nuance, fragrant herbal details and savoury complexity underneath the broody restraint. Top notes of vanilla, charred oak, camphor and preserved cherry. Fresh and exact on the palate, with dark chocolate and coffee beans lining the muscular tannins. Very long finish."
