Dear Wine Lover,
Most serious Barolo collectors today know the names that anchor the modern conversation: Giacomo Conterno, Bartolo Mascarello, Giuseppe Rinaldi. Far fewer realize that G.B. Burlotto walked so Giacomo Conterno could run.
During his seventy-seven years as a winemaker (1850–1927), G.B. Burlotto's accomplishments were rivaled only by Biondi-Santi and Vega Sicilia, as he achieved superstardom in a world dominated by French wines. He pioneered selling Barolo in bottle — not cask, not demijohn — predating even Giacomo Conterno's Barolo Monfortino. As official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy, the dynasty that once ruled Piedmont, he didn't just make his own name — he made his village of Verduno as renowned as Serralunga or La Morra.
G.B.'s death in 1927 took away both Burlotto's driving force and Verduno's greatest champion. Both faded into obscurity for decades. But now, with G.B.'s great-great-grandson Fabio Alessandria as winemaker, Burlotto's star is again rising — reclaiming its position as one of Piedmont's great small producers. Monica Larner at Wine Advocate calls him "the Nebbiolo Whisperer."

Why the 2022 Is a Once-in-a-Decade Bottle
The Burlotto family declassified every cru. Including the $650 Monvigliero.
For the 2022 vintage, Fabio Alessandria made an extraordinary decision. As Vinous's Antonio Galloni reports: "The Burlotto family chose not to bottle their 2022 single-vineyard Barolos because they thought those wines were not singular enough to be bottled separately. Instead, all the lots were blended into a single wine."
Translation: the $104.97 Burlotto Barolo 2022 contains the exact same juice that, in any other vintage, would have been bottled separately as Monvigliero ($650, 100 pts), Acclivi, and the rest. Galloni's verdict: "It is certainly the wine of the vintage."

Vinous · Antonio Galloni · "The Wine of the Vintage"
"The 2022 Barolo is stellar. It is certainly the wine of the vintage, taking into account quality at a price that is likely to remain quite fair. The Burlotto family chose not to bottle their 2022 single-vineyard Barolos because they thought those wines were not singular enough to be bottled separately. Instead, all the lots were blended into a single wine. It's a gorgeous wine in every way. (Drink 2027–2042)"

98 Points · James Suckling
"A complex and classy Barolo with vermouth-like aromas of cinnamon candy, rhubarb, potpourri, wild strawberries, dried cherries, angelica and licorice. Full-bodied and warming, it shows freshness with thick, muscular and dusty tannins and balanced fruit. Drinkable now, but best from 2027."

2024 Langhe Nebbiolo
WA 93 · Monica Larner
Wine Advocate: "The deft hand of Nebbiolo Whisperer Fabio Alessandria is apparent in this entry-level red… a pretty level of transparency and lightness with a thin veil of wild berry, wilted blue flower and alpine stone. The effect is refined and very fine."

P.S. If you've never had Burlotto's Monvigliero, the 2022 base Barolo is the closest you will ever get to it at a hundred dollars — by the producer's own admission. They simply decided their crus weren't distinct enough this vintage and poured all of it into one bottle. The cellar math here is rare. Text 650-880-3553 if you'd like a multi-bottle inquiry or to put a Monvigliero on hold.
