Among the great houses of Champagne, Philipponnat sits in a category of one. Their family has owned vines in Aÿ since 1522 — that's four hundred and seventy-three years before Veuve Clicquot was founded, three centuries before Krug. They were suppliers to the court of Louis XIV. The 1522 cuvée in this list is their bicentennial in liquid form.
But the reason serious Champagne collectors care about Philipponnat in 2026 is one specific hillside, walled off in 1935: Clos des Goisses. In old Champenois dialect, "goisse" means a very steep slope, and Clos des Goisses is a pure-chalk, due-south, 45-degree wall of vineyard on the Marne in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ — the first parcel in history bottled as a single-vineyard Champagne. It took the rest of Champagne fifty years to follow. Today it is considered, alongside Krug Clos du Mesnil and Salon, one of the three or four greatest single-site Champagnes in existence.

A Few Philipponnat Firsts
First in the chalk. First in transparency. First in the cellar.
Beyond inventing the single-vineyard Champagne in 1935, Philipponnat was the first house ever to print the base vintage, dosage, and disgorgement date on its back labels — the radical transparency that grower-Champagne lovers now take for granted. Their reserve wines age in a solera-style perpetual reserve started in 1946. And every cuvée ages at least three years on lees in the cellar — twice the legal minimum.
