A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

Ross Cobb has been extremely kind and generous with us. For the past year and a half he has kept allocating us cases out of a wine he only makes 275 cases of, so that our Artisans could drink it.

Then one of our corporate clients, a renowned bank, needed four cases of this exact wine to gift their top clients. Ross released the very last lot for them, and he released three more cases to us, a last shot for you to bolster your cellar.

If these do not sell, I am going to drink them all myself over time.

What Robb Report Says About Ross Cobb

Robb Report’s wine editors put it this way: “In-the-know Pinot Noir lovers with an eye on Sonoma are familiar with the likes of Williams Selyem, Hirsch Vineyards, and Flowers Vineyard & Winery, but many would be surprised to learn that each has been made at some point by the same winemaker: Ross Cobb.”

He started at Ferrari-Carano in 1994, was hired by Burt Williams and Ed Selyem in 1998, moved to Flowers in 2000 and stayed eight more vintages, then became head winemaker at Hirsch in 2009 for six years. He began making Cobb with his parents in 2001.

Ross describes his own wines as “very true to the site and providing a sense of place, similar to Burgundy,” and the magazine describes the method: “Cold soaks, partial whole cluster fermentation with native yeast, and 22 months in mostly older French barrels with a minimum of new oak yield an elegant, restrained style that is much more in line with examples from Burgundy than the over-extracted style that Sonoma can be known for.”

On the wines from Coastlands, including this one, they are blunt: “The pinnacle of its portfolio is the trio of wines from its original site.”

The Vineyard

Coastlands sits three miles from the Pacific at 1,150 feet, on a former sheep farm that Ross’s parents, David and Diane, planted in 1989. Those are some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines on the Sonoma Coast, and Williams Selyem bottled their fruit as a single-vineyard wine for years.

Old Firs Block takes its name from the Douglas firs standing at the edge of the site.

The Bottom Line

Three cases, and then this wine is finished for us.

Ninety-eight points from Jeb Dunnuck, 275 cases made, and vines planted three miles from the Pacific in 1989 by the family that still farms them. Ross Cobb has looked after us for a year and a half, and this is the end of it.

Thirty-six bottles. If they do not sell, I will drink them myself over time, and I will not be sad about it.
