2023 IWSC
Sparkling Wine
Producer Trophy
— Winner —
Awarded to Rare Champagne by the International Wine & Spirit Competition — the most rigorous blind tasting in the trade. The recognition cemented Rare's evolution from Piper-Heidsieck's prestíge cuvée to a standalone house of indisputable, world-leading quality.

“Exceptional.” · “Rare beauty.”

Dear Wine Lover,
Rare Champagne began life as the tête de cuvée of Piper-Heidsieck — the once-in-a-generation prestíge release the house declared only when nature produced something extraordinary. The first vintage was 1976, after a legendary heatwave. Since then, in nearly fifty years, only eleven vintages have ever been declared: 1976, 1979, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2008, and 2013. That's it.
In 2023, Rare officially separated from Piper-Heidsieck and became its own house — "think Delamotte and Salon," as Jeb Dunnuck put it — and immediately announced its arrival by taking the International Wine & Spirit Competition's Sparkling Wine Producer Trophy against the entire world of Champagne and bubbles combined. Among the producers it bested: estates whose names you already know by heart.
The 2013 Rare Millésime — bottled in 2014, aged eight years on lees in their Reims cellars, then a final year on cork — was just released. Jeb Dunnuck scored it 98 points. James Suckling 96. Decanter 96. Wine Spectator 95. Wine Enthusiast 95. Wine Advocate 94+. Six top critics, all between 94 and 98. For Father's Day, this is the bottle.

98 Points · Jeb Dunnuck · "I could drink this all day"
"Rare is moving their Champagne Millésime to a new brand and wants it to stand alone. (Think Delamotte and Salon.)… Aromatics are exquisite and well-balanced, with fresh notes of key lime, candied apple, fresh croissant dough, fresh pineapple, and honeysuckle… a rounded and supple texture and a pillowy mousse… a fantastic balance of decadence and freshness, and I could drink this all day. It's going to have a long drinking window. Drink 2024–2044 and beyond."

|
95 Points · Wine Spectator · Alison Napjus
"An elegant, finessed Champagne, with the creamy mousse carrying a finely meshed yet concentrated range of blackberry puree and poached apricot flavors, plus blood orange peel, salted pistachio and aromatic accents of verbena, chalk and oyster shell. Shows mouthwatering acidity that carries the complex profile on the long finish. Drink now through 2038. 500 cases imported."
|
|
94+ Points · Wine Advocate · Drink 2027–2058
"A youthfully reserved bouquet of white flowers, passion fruit, buttered toast and lemon oil, with a deft touch of smoky reduction. Medium- to full-bodied, bright and tightly wound, revealing a crisp core of fruit that beautifully integrates its racy spine of acidity, enlivened by a pillowy mousse, culminating in a long, saline finish. Promising to blossom further with additional bottle age."

P.S. There have only ever been eleven Rare vintages declared in fifty years. The 2002 now trades for nearly twice what we're asking for the 2013. Whether Dad opens it for his birthday this year, opens it the year his first grandkid graduates, or never opens it at all and his estate passes it down — this is the kind of bottle that ages from gift to heirloom.
