A Personal Note
Dear Artisans, The Arterberry Maresh "Maresh Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2023 is the fifth best wine in the world according to James Suckling. Not the fifth best Oregon wine, not the fifth best Pinot Noir — the fifth best wine. The fifth best wine, out of everything he tasted on earth this year. And the same wine landed at number two on his Top 100 Wines of the USA. Suckling put it directly against the RAEN Royal St. Robert sitting one place above it and wrote that Arterberry is “equally compelling, and it’s half the price of the RAEN wine.” His full note called it a testament to Oregon’s ability to produce Pinot Noir that “rivals the best from California and Burgundy at a fraction of the cost.” I have been telling you this for many years. Here is what sits behind it. Jim Maresh’s grandparents planted the Maresh Vineyard in 1970, when Eyrie was the only other vineyard in the Dundee Hills. The vines are fifty-five years old, own-rooted, non-irrigated and organically farmed from the first day. If Oregon classified its vineyards the way Burgundy does, Maresh would be a Grand Cru, and the wine Suckling ranked comes off blocks planted in 1970, 1972 and 1983. Jim is the third generation on this land. His grandfather planted it. His father, Fred Arterberry Jr., was one of the first Oregon winemakers with a fermentation science degree from UC Davis — and the Arterberry label closed when Fred died in 1990. Jim brought the name back in 2007, down to the font on the label. The house rules have not moved since: alcohol under fourteen percent, new oak under fifteen percent on the Pinots, and no pumping, no fining, no filtering, no acidulating, no watering. Erin Brooks of the Wine Advocate put it plainly — these are “some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere, not just in the US.”

Tasting with Jim
in the red barn.
I tasted at the winery with Jim in January of 2024, in the red barn on Worden Hill Road that anybody who has driven up into the Dundee Hills will recognise. Photographs below. The lineup on that table is more or less what is on this page.
Eric Guido of Vinous has made the same trip: “Tasting with Jim Maresh is always a pleasure. It’s inspiring to absorb his enthusiasm for what he does, his love of the region and his vision for Oregon’s untapped potential.” Guido also explains the method better than I can — Jim picks “al dente,” early, chasing crunchiness, and the result is wine that is generous young and still standing in fifteen years.

Arterberry Maresh "Maresh Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2023
This is the wine. Fifty-five-year-old own-rooted vines on three blocks, hand-picked between the twelfth and nineteenth of October, wild yeast, fully destemmed, two years in barrel. Non-irrigated, as everything here is.
Suckling’s 98-point note is the one now attached to the number five slot in the world: “Tense and savory, with layers of spicy herbs and black pepper, together with pure, elegant fruit wrapped in blood-orange zest.” Vinous went 96 and finished with a single word, “Fabulous.” The Wine Advocate went 95. Better from 2029.

Arterberry Maresh "Maresh Vineyard" Chardonnay 2023
The highest-scored wine on this page after the Pinot, and the one I would argue is the harder bottle to replace. A single small block of Wente clone planted in 1983, two hundred and forty cases made, the whole world’s supply.
Guido gave it 97 and reached for the word “otherworldly” on the texture. Decanter gave it 96 and called Chardonnay Jim’s specialty. Wine Spectator and the Wine Advocate both went 94. Four critics, an average north of ninety-five, on a wine that exists in two hundred and forty cases.

Arterberry Maresh "Weber Vineyard" Pinot Noir 2023
A quarter mile down Worden Hill Road from Maresh — east-facing at four hundred feet, all Pommard clone planted in 1983. Picked on the twenty-second of September, wild yeast, two years in barrel.
The darker, tighter one of the three Pinots. Suckling found “deep dark cherries and hints of cassis and wild raspberry bush” over a firm tannin structure and said outright it needs time — try from 2028. Guido went the other way and found it “wildly spicy and lifted,” all strawberry and tangerine zest and basil. Both are right; it depends entirely when you open it.

Arterberry Maresh "Old Vines" Pinot Noir 2023
The way in, and the bottle to buy by the case. Fruit from both Maresh and Weber, vines averaging fifty years, at forty-four ninety-seven. A previous vintage of this exact cuvee, the 2018, finished number twenty-two on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2021.
Ninety-five from Vinous and ninety-five from Suckling in the same year. Guido: “seamless and elegant, silken in texture… all framed by regal tannins.” Suckling: “bright and crunchy with a vibrant character.” This is what fifty-year-old Dundee Hills vines taste like for under fifty dollars, which should not be possible.

Tan Fruit "Maresh Vineyard" Chardonnay 2022
Tan Fruit is what Jim does when the Arterberry rules do not apply. He founded it in 2019 to buy fruit he wanted to play with: “I hear about fruit for sale that I’d love to play with. It doesn’t work for Arterberry, but for Tan Fruit, there are no rules.” Erin Brooks called the first set some of the best Chardonnays of the vintage and added, “I hope to be first to sign up for this mailing list.”
This one is Dijon clone off a steep south-facing slope, and Jim is refreshingly rude about it: “I hate Dijon clones. I don’t want this wine to express itself.” He uses it for acidity, minerality and texture rather than fruit, and the result is the most Chablis-like thing in the room. Brooks: flint and petrichor first, then apricot, elderflower liqueur, lime peel and hazelnuts.

"From a block of Dijon clone vines planted in 1991 on a steep, south-facing slope at 675 feet. Barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in 15% new French oak, plus four months in stainless steel, it’s reminiscent of Chablis and boasts exceptionally pure aromas. It opens with flint and petrichor before blossoming to apricot, elderflower liqueur, lime peel and hazelnuts. For several days after it’s opened, the Maresh Vineyard becomes more and more expressive, pointing to a long life in the cellar." July 2024 |
