Morgan Twain-Peterson MW is not a winemaker who chases scores or trends. He is a historian — a preservationist of California’s most irreplaceable viticultural heritage. His mission: find and farm the oldest surviving vines in the state, vines that were already ancient when Prohibition nearly wiped them out.

He didn’t arrive at that calling by accident. Morgan’s father is Joel Peterson — founder of Ravenswood and the undisputed godfather of American Zinfandel. Joel spent decades championing old-vine Zinfandel as a serious, cellar-worthy wine at a time when the category was dismissed as jug-wine territory. Morgan grew up in that world, absorbed its values, and then built something entirely his own — carrying the torch forward with a Master of Wine credential and an obsessive commitment to sourcing fruit that no one else even knew to look for.

The Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel is his signature expression — sourced from an eclectic field mix of vines averaging 80 years of age, with fruit drawn from some of Sonoma’s most historic ranches: Sodini, Bedrock, Teldeschi, and Evangelho. These are not commodity vineyards. They are living monuments, yielding small crops of concentrated, character-driven fruit that modern plantings simply cannot replicate.

When 80-Year-Old Vines Aren’t Old Enough…

Meet the Evangelho Vineyard — planted in the 1890s — 9 bottles left.

The Evangelho Vineyard was planted in the 1890s — before the automobile, before Prohibition, before California wine was famous. These vines survived every hardship the 20th century threw at them: drought, disease, economics, neglect. They survive today because their roots run deep in the pure sand soils of Contra Costa, and because Morgan Twain-Peterson found them and refused to let them go.

The result: a field blend of Zinfandel, Mataro, and Carignan — with fragments of Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Mission, Palomino, and even a single ancient Clairette Blanche vine identified only through DNA analysis. This is not a wine. It is a time capsule. Only 500 cases made. Only 9 bottles remain at Artisan.

Carlisle Has Closed. These Are the Last.

Three of Carlisle's final cuvées — all scoring 93 to 96 points across the majors. When these clear, the catalog goes silent for good.

Mike Officer built Carlisle over two decades into one of California’s most respected small-production estates — a winery whose single-vineyard Zinfandels and Rhône-style blends consistently drew scores in the mid-to-high 90s from every major critic who tasted them. Then, quietly, he shut it down.

The 2022 Old Hill Ranch is the last wine Carlisle will ever produce from this site. Old Hill is one of the most historically significant vineyards in Sonoma — planted in 1885, with over 20 varieties co-mingled in the original field blend. Wine Spectator gave it 96 points. Jeb Dunnuck gave it 95+. Vinous gave it 95. At $54.97, it is already underpriced. As a final vintage from a shuttered estate, it is irreplaceable.

Mike Officer was famously a Zinfandel obsessive — but he was equally proud of his Syrahs. Papa's Block was his biggest, most muscular Syrah, the cuvée he made when he wanted "intensity over finesse" (his words). The 2021 is his favorite vintage of Papa's Block to date, built explicitly for aging. Only 489 cases ever produced. Twenty-four days on the skins, 30% whole cluster, all French oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Papera Ranch is the grande dame of the Russian River Valley — planted in 1934 by Celestino "Charlie" Papera. Most of the blocks are 95%+ ancient Zinfandel; one block contains Carignan with a sprinkle of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Carlisle picked it in three passes in early October, bled off 7-12% of the juice for concentration, and aged it in all French oak (21% new) before bottling unfined and unfiltered. 1,044 cases made. 4 remain at Artisan.
