Elena Walch is the most internationally recognized name in Alto Adige winemaking — an Austrian-Italian architect by training who married into a winemaking family in Termeno and transformed the estate into one of the region's finest and most awarded producers. Her Kastelaz vineyard — a steep, south-facing amphitheater above the town — is the source of her iconic single-vineyard Gewurztraminer, widely regarded as one of the world's greatest expressions of that grape.

But the range extends far beyond Kastelaz. Her Pinot Grigio — sourced from estate vineyards across the Tramin and Caldaro zones — demonstrates what the grape becomes when farmed at altitude in volcanic, mineral-rich soils: aromatic, textured, saline, and genuinely age-worthy. "I don't usually like Pinot Grigio. Why would this be different?"

Because the Pinot Grigio you've tried almost certainly came from the Veneto or Friuli plains — high-volume, low-altitude viticulture optimized for yield rather than quality. Alto Adige is a fundamentally different proposition: steep alpine vineyards, volcanic mineral soils, and a cool climate that produces a wine with genuine texture, salinity, and aromatic complexity. Wine Spectator does not rank flat, forgettable white wines #33 in the world. We promise this will surprise you.

How is this different from a Burgundy Chardonnay or an Alsatian Pinot Gris?

Burgundy Chardonnay is richer and more textured, often with more oak influence. Alsatian Pinot Gris (the same grape as Pinot Grigio) tends toward greater body and residual sugar. The Elena Walch sits in a beautiful middle ground: more aromatic and mineral than most Burgundy whites, crisper and drier than Alsace, with a saline alpine character that is entirely its own. It is a more versatile food wine than either.
