“Why does an old vine make better wine?”
A young vine is greedy — it grows lots of mediocre fruit. An 81-year-old vine has given up on quantity. It drops its yield and pours everything into a handful of tiny, intense berries. Smaller berries mean more skin per drop — more color, more structure, more flavor. And roots that have spent eight decades digging 20+ feet down reach minerals a young vine will never taste. Old vines don’t try harder. They’ve stopped trying to be anything but great.
“Is Zinfandel a serious wine — or just a cookout red?”
Both, and that’s the secret. Most Zinfandel is a fruit bomb. Turley proved Zin could be a trophy wine — structured, age-worthy, and built to sit on the same table as a $300 Cabernet. The Dusi is the proof: rich enough for a brisket, refined enough for your best glassware.

Great Wine Is Made by People
Helen Turley — the woman who invented the cult wine. Before founding Marcassin (her own Pinot and Chardonnay now run $500+ a bottle), Helen was the founding winemaker for her brother Larry’s label. She is the “super-consultant” who took Colgin and Bryant Family from startups to 100-point legends — proving California could rival first-growth Bordeaux. She brought that same maximum-intensity credo to Turley.
Larry Turley — the ER doctor who resuscitates vineyards. Larry spent 25 years as an emergency-room physician before turning that instinct on dying 19th- and 20th-century vineyards. He sees gnarled old vines as living time capsules worth saving. You’re drinking the result of his obsession.
Tegan Passalacqua — the world’s leading authority on old vines. Turley’s current Director of Winemaking and co-founder of the Historic Vineyard Society. Under Tegan, the wines have reached their highest critical peak — the juiciness and power sommeliers now clamor for.
