A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

If Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label is in your rotation, you already know what you love: that Pinot-led weight, the toasted-brioche and salted-almond core, the structure that holds up at the table.

This is not about replacing it. It is about the second bottle — the one that lives in your fridge so the famous one can stay special.

Meet M. Haslinger & Fils

It is made at G.H. Martel, founded in 1869 on the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, the main street of Champagne itself. The house has been run by the Rapeneau family, four generations deep in the trade, for over forty years, with fruit from Premier Cru vineyards in the Vallée de la Marne.

Haslinger is their quiet cuvée: named, the house says, for the maiden name of Jean-Remy Rapeneau’s mother, and sold in small lots to merchants instead of splashed across billboards. No marketing budget in the bottle price is a big part of why it reaches your glass at $28.97.

New To Champagne?

All you need to know: this is the real thing. Bottle-fermented, aged on its lees, grown on the cold chalk soils that give Champagne its tension. It is Pinot-led (46% Pinot Noir, 37% Meunier, 17% Chardonnay), the same grape weight that gives Veuve its backbone. If you like Veuve, your palate is already trained for this.

Know Your Champagne?

The details that matter: fermented in small oak casks, not steel. Malolactic blocked, so the acid stays bright and the wine vinous, not soft. 10 g/l, dead-center Brut. One importer calls it a “junior Bollinger.” Pale gold, fine bead, white fruit and citrus blossom over a savory, chalky finish.

Why A Case, Or Two

Because Champagne is the one wine you always need: the hostess gift, the last-minute dinner, the promotion, the anniversary, the Tuesday that earns it. One case is $347.64. Two cases (24 bottles) means you pour real Épernay Champagne whenever the moment lands, for a year, and never think about it again. Drink most of it fresh; tuck a few away 12 to 18 months and the brioche and toasted-hazelnut notes deepen beautifully.

Why Now, And Why Fast

We are down to the last 60 bottles allocated to us for the end of summer: five cases, no more. Here is the pattern we see every time: a Veuve drinker opens one bottle, the lightbulb goes on, and they come back the next week for two or three cases. It takes just two customers doing exactly that and the whole allocation is gone.

Layer on the steady tariff pressure on French wine, and the fact that we cannot promise we will source more at $28.97, and the move is obvious: lock in your case before the rest of the Veuve regulars do.

Pour It With

Solo, ice-cold. Salted Marcona almonds alongside. The chalk finish wakes the palate.

Oysters and mignonette. The textbook match for Pinot weight and saline minerality.

Anything fried. Chicken, truffle popcorn, salty chips. Bubbles and acid cut fat like nothing else.

Vegan. Wild-mushroom tartines with chive crème and lemon, or figs with toasted walnuts and balsamic.

The Bottom Line

Stock the case.
Pour the house Champagne all year.

Real Épernay Champagne, Pinot-led like the label you already love, at $28.97 a bottle by the case. Save your Veuve for the moments it was made for, and let this one handle everything in between.

Try it side by side with your Veuve this weekend: Pinot against Pinot. That head-to-head has sold more Haslinger than anything we could write here. Get your case locked in while the allocation holds.

Cheers,

— James Tran
