A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
In August I told you the door had closed on ROAR. The wines were leaving distribution and going back into the winery library, and what sat in our shop was the last that came through wholesale. I believed it when I wrote it.
Then Nick Franscioni opened the family’s cellar.
Nick is Gary’s youngest son. He grew up in these vines, came home to them in 2017, and now runs the winery alongside winemaker Scott Shapley. He released a library drop to us from the family’s own cellar, just in time for Thanksgiving and the holiday season.
So here is all of it: eight Pinot Noirs, oldest to youngest, then two Chardonnays.
Years Already In The Bottle
The library bottles are the 2017 Soberanes, the 2021 Soberanes and the 2021 Sierra Mar. Fewer than 300 cases of the 2017 were made.
This is the bottle most people never taste: Pinot Noir that somebody else has already been patient with. The 2017 is nine years old, and at $84.99 it costs exactly what the 2024 Rosella’s costs. Seven more years in the bottle, and nothing added to the price.
Four Generations Of Farming
Silvio Franscioni came to the Salinas Valley from Switzerland in 1886. His grandson Gary planted Rosella’s Vineyard around the family home in 1996 and named it for his wife. Garys’ Vineyard followed in 1997 with his friend Gary Pisoni.
Each vine is hand-tended every 12 days by the family, and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Most of what the Franscionis grow is sold to other wineries. Kosta Browne, Testarossa, Siduri, Twomey and Rombauer have all bought their fruit. What the family keeps becomes ROAR.
The Pinot That Won Blind
In 2006, the ROAR 2004 Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir took first place in a blind tasting hosted by Robert Parker and Karen MacNeil, alongside wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Dujac, Marcassin and Kistler.
Parker’s account: “Ever since a ROAR Pinot Noir blew away a great number of Burgundies in a blind tasting I hosted at the Culinary Institute in Napa, I have taken a special interest in following the wines from this producer. They go from strength to strength.”
MacNeil, who wrote The Wine Bible: “Saying ROAR to a Pinot Noir lover is like saying ‘Ferrari’ to a person who loves cars.”
For The Holiday Table
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the two wines that get along with everything on a Thanksgiving table. James Suckling found “red flowers and holiday spices” in the 2023 Rosella’s. Vinous called the 2024 Rosella’s Chardonnay “a warm hug in Chardonnay form.”
Pouring for a crowd? The SLH Pinot and SLH Chardonnay are both $54.99, and Vinous calls that Chardonnay “an over-performer and a crowd-pleaser.” Giving a bottle? Garys’ 2024 is the one to lay down. Jeb Dunnuck’s advice: hold and drink 2028 to 2038.
Cheers,
James Tran
Artisan Wine & Spirits
Why This Matters
• A library drop from the family cellar. The 2017 and 2021 Pinots come with their years in bottle already behind them.
• A 96 from $54.99. $54.99 buys Wine Enthusiast 96 on the SLH Pinot. $84.99 buys it on the 2017 Soberanes and Garys’ 2024.
• Two Chardonnays for the first course. The Wine Palate gave Rosella’s 96. Dunnuck and Wine Enthusiast gave the SLH 94.

The family’s nickname for Soberanes is The Challenger, and they describe it as more cowboy than scholar. Planted directly south of Garys’ with Gary Pisoni, it gives juicy berries, leather and savory herbs. Fewer than 300 cases of this 2017 were made.
Wine Enthusiast · Matt Kettmann · 96 Points · Editor’s Choice
Aromas of mulberry, red cherry, cracked pepper, wild thyme and an earthy richness show on the dynamic nose of this bottling by the Franscioni family. There is a great bounce to the palate, with tart strawberry and plum flavors that mesh with accents of tangerine rind, marjoram and dried sage.
Jeb Dunnuck · 94+ Points
The 2017 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard (brought up in 74% new French oak) is another layered, balanced wine from this team. Strawberries, blueberries, spring flowers, and spicy notes all define the bouquet. Medium-bodied, with good acidity, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

If seeking out a flavorful, attention-commanding Pinot Noir, this is a satisfying choice, starting with baked black cherry and a spice rack of aromas on the nose. There's a chalky texture that wraps around the undeniably ripe flavors of black cherry, black plum and rich spices on the unctuous palate.
Vinous · Antonio Galloni · 94 Points
Deep, rich and expansive, the 2021 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard packs a pretty huge punch. Succulent dark cherry, plum, lavender, spice, menthol and tobacco are all amplified in a dramatic Pinot that delivers the goods, big time. Superb.

Gary planted Sierra Mar in 2007. It took three miles of pipeline to water, running from the valley floor to 1,200 feet, with parts of the site above the fog line. The family calls it adventurous and a little wild.
Wine Enthusiast · Matt Kettmann · 95 Points
Juicy black cherry and boysenberry aromas are generous on the nose of this single vineyard expression, with waves of wet soil and crushed slate adding a mineral nuance. The lush palate of Luxardo cherry and a spice rack of flavors is wrapped in grippy tannins that elevate this wine to the upper echelon.
Jeb Dunnuck · 94 Points
Another pretty, perfumed wine in the vintage, the 2021 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard has ripe strawberry and framboise-like fruit as well as ample background spice and dried herb nuances, and it gains a darker, floral edge with time in the glass. Medium-bodied on the palate, with nicely integrated oak, velvety tannins, and just a round, supple mouthfeel.

The vineyard that wraps around the family home, planted in 1996 and named for Gary’s wife. Vinous calls it “always the last vineyard that ROAR harvests,” and the family calls this their most floral and elegant Pinot. 455 cases made.
Jeb Dunnuck · 96 Points
Coming from a great site in the heart of the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2023 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard displays a medium ruby hue and reveals a brilliant, Volnay-like perfume of sweet redcurrants, framboise, spring flowers, and damp, foresty earth. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and incredibly elegant on the palate, it has nicely integrated tannins and acidity, no hard edges, and a great finish. It shows the cooler, even, lengthy style of the vintage and will evolve gracefully over the coming decade.
James Suckling · Jim Gordon · 95 Points · #83 Top 100 USA
Gorgeous aromas of red flowers and holiday spices are followed by vivid fruit flavors on an elegant texture. So layered in cinnamon, clove, cedar and pure black cherry flavors. Medium tannins and fresh acidity add a nice lift on the palate and lingering finish. Drink now or hold.

Four critics gave it one number and described different wines. Vinous found “a massive wine” that will need time. Suckling found “A warm, broad, generous wine.” It is also ten dollars less than the 2021.
Vinous · Billy Norris · 95 Points
Dark and brooding, the 2023 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard is a massive wine. Black cherry, blackberry, menthol and underbrush introduce a Pinot Noir of somber intensity and serious complexity, but yet again, the bright 2023 acids make this feel very energized. … This will certainly need time to come around, but patience will be rewarded.
Jeb Dunnuck · 95 Points
Beautiful aromatics of red and black berry fruits, sappy flowers, sassafras, and baking spices emerge from the 2023 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard. Round and layered on the palate, this medium-bodied effort shows outstanding balance, sweet, velvety tannins, and impressive length. A very complete, complex, and satisfying wine from the Sierra Mar Vineyard, it should shine for a solid decade.

Fruit from six vineyards across 12 miles of the appellation, and the same 96 from Wine Enthusiast as the single-vineyard Rosella’s. Matt Kettmann’s reasoning: “the regional cuvees are often better than the sum of their parts.” This is the one to pour for a crowd.
Wine Enthusiast · Matt Kettmann · 96 Points · Editor’s Choice
As much as fans crave this appellation's single-vineyard expressions, the regional cuvees are often better than the sum of their parts. This bottling falls right in line, starting with buoyant aromas of rose potpourri, intense strawberry and baking spice on the nose. The palate pairs poached berry and stewed cherry flavors with acid-driven blood orange peel and herbal pine needle touches.
Jeb Dunnuck · 93 Points
Bright red fruits, sassafras, minty herbs, and flowers define the 2023 Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands. Pretty and pure, this medium-bodied effort shows considerable elegance, soft tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a forward, charming, and delicious personality.

Named for two Garys, Franscioni and Pisoni, and the vineyard behind the 2004 that won that blind tasting. ROAR’s winemaker describes it as “a 19th-century library with a cigar in hand.” Vinous says “Give this time,” which makes it the bottle to give.
Wine Enthusiast · Matt Kettmann · 96 Points
Generous and imminently approachable aromas of Bing cherries, rose bouquets and toasted fennel pollen draw the nose into this bottling from an iconic vineyard. The palate shows a crisp edge of cherry and lemon zest flavors, with light herb and elegant baking spice flavors contributing further complexity.
Jeb Dunnuck · Virginie Boone · 95 Points
Considered the most in-your-face of the vineyards, as even the family will tell you, the 2024 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard is a huge-impact site of muscular intensity, with weight and pedigree, planted nearly all to the powerful Pisoni clone. Slatey, textural, and full-bodied, it exudes rich red berry and cherry fruit with spice components and focused, structured tannins, ending in notes of gravel and cola. Hold and drink 2028-2038.

Jeb Dunnuck · Virginie Boone · 96 Points
From the estate vineyard the fog and wind get to first, the 2024 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard offers a softer elegance and demure profile and yet is still richly full-bodied in blue fruit and rose petal. … It’s a complex red, with a lot of baking and wood spice as well as enduring earthiness within its supple, elongated tannin structure. Drink now through 2036.
The Wine Palate · Lisa Perrotti-Brown · 96 Points
Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2024 Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir slips sensuously from the glass with distinctive rose oil and lavender notes, leading to a core of juicy red cherries and raspberry coulis, plus a waft of garrigue. Fruit from Rosella’s, Soberanes and Sierra Mar. Wine Enthusiast made it an Editor’s Choice and called it “a wise buy,” saying it competes with the winery’s single-vineyard bottlings.
Wine Enthusiast · Matt Kettmann · 94 Points · Editor’s Choice
This appellation blend competes with this winery's single-vineyard expressions, making for a wise buy. Lovely aromas of peach, white flower and buttered pastry lead from the nose into a palate that's tight in texture, bright in acidity and awash in creamy cherimoya and nectarine flavors.
Vinous · Billy Norris · 93 Points
The 2024 Chardonnay (Santa Lucia Highlands) is a fabulous edition of ROAR’s entry-level bottling. Floral and lifted but creamy and mouth-filling, the 2024 has a little bit of everything. Apricot, candied tangerine, chamomile and marzipan express an attractive richness, while archetypal SLH acidity blows like a breeze through the finish. This is an over-performer and a crowd-pleaser.

ROAR’s first Chardonnay came from this vineyard in 2007, and the family still calls it their shining star. Wine Enthusiast named this 2024 a Cellar Selection, so it will hold well past the holidays if a bottle survives them.
The Wine Palate · Lisa Perrotti-Brown · 96 Points
The 2024 Rosella's Vineyard Chardonnay slowly emerges from the glass with a very pretty perfume of white peaches and honey-drizzled pears, plus hints of marzipan, fresh ginger, and allspice. The full-bodied palate is wonderfully seamless with elegant orchard fruit layers, well-knit freshness, and a satiny texture, finishing long and whispery.
Jeb Dunnuck · Virginie Boone · 95 Points

The Bottom Line
The family cellar opened. Thanksgiving is three weeks away.
After August I did not expect to write this email. Nick Franscioni released a library drop from the family’s cellar, and it landed in time for the holiday table. Eight Pinot Noirs, two Chardonnays, from $54.99.
If you take one bottle, take the 2017 Soberanes: Wine Enthusiast 96, Editor’s Choice, nine years old, $84.99. If you are setting a table for a crowd, the SLH Pinot and SLH Chardonnay will carry it at $54.99.
Cheers,
James Tran
