The Paring by Jonata and the Jonata and Hilt flagship wines
A Personal Note

Dear Artisans,

In June we poured the Jonata and Hilt lineup for a room of Artisans, and there was a feeding frenzy across the board. From their 99-point Radian Single Vineyard, to their second label: The Paring, at $28.97, all made by the same man in the same cellar from the same estate fruit.

Two months later, we are still re-ordering them.

The Quiet Empire

Stan Kroenke owns Screaming Eagle, the most famous cult Cabernet in America, and a majority stake in Domaine Bonneau du Martray, the only estate on the hill of Corton-Charlemagne that makes nothing but Grand Cru. He also owns three estates in Santa Barbara: Jonata in Ballard Canyon, The Hilt in the Sta. Rita Hills, and The Paring as the accessible label.

All three have had exactly one winemaker since day one.

One Winemaker, Twenty-Two Years

When Andy Erickson, the name behind Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, BOND and Favia, went looking for someone to hand a billionaire's new California estates, he picked a soil-science kid from Kansas City who had cold-called his way into Napa. Matt Dees has run all three labels alone, every vintage since 2004, and is now widely counted among the finest winemakers in the country.

His method, in his own words: sandpaper, not hammer and chisel. Coax the vineyard out rather than beat it in. You can taste exactly what that means across all four Paring wines below.

What The Paring Actually Is

Vineyard blocks that are too young or too far off-style for Jonata and The Hilt get declassified into The Paring. Same farmer, same cellar, same winemaker, at roughly a fifth of the flagship price. That is the entire trick, and there is nothing clever about it.

The flagships are a different story. Those are allocations, and what you see below is what is physically on our shelf: three bottles here, four there, and no more coming. Every count in Part Two was verified against inventory this morning.

Bright citrus and stone fruit, lifted by relentless Pacific wind and tiny yields. Three critics agree on what it is: a terrific value that drinks well above its price. Roast chicken, cream sauces, hard cheeses, and any oyster within reach.

James Suckling

“Yellow apple, hard pineapple and crisp acidity provide an energetic and textural context for stone fruit and sumac. A kiss of sweet spice is threaded throughout, as is a filigree of minerality. Drink now.” (Sep 2025)

“Melon, stone fruits, brioche, and honeyed flower notes all shine in the 2023 Chardonnay, a medium-bodied, juicy, lively Chardonnay that has integrated acidity and a supple, hard-to-resist style. It's a terrific value. Drink 2025-2030.” (Sep 2025)

The consummate overachiever: immediate drinking pleasure without giving up complexity. Bright red cherry, rhubarb, mixed berries and Sta. Rita spice, on supple tannins. The 2024 is too new for scores, so the note below is James Suckling on the vintage before it.

James Suckling · Prior Vintage

“Youthful fruit is still coming into its own, but it's already starting to flesh out with flavors of rhubarb compote, mixed berries and bergamot. A dusting of oak duff in the background provides a compelling counterpoint to rose hips, woodsy spice and minerals. Very long on the generous finish.(Sep 2025)

70% Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% each of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, aged 22 months in French oak. Cassis, tobacco leaf, cedar and that cocoa-dusted sandy-soil signature. The single best argument in this email, and it will cellar five to ten years. Steak, lamb, aged cheddar.

“Darker berries, cassis, graphite, and violet notes as well as classy oak all emerge from the 2021 Red, a brilliant red based off 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% each of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. It way over-delivers and tastes like it costs four to five times the price.(Aug 2024)

The Hilt by Jonata “Radian Vineyard” Pinot Noir 2023
JD 99 · JS 98 · WA 97 · VM 96+

The most decorated single-vineyard wine The Hilt has released. Radian is a high-altitude site of whipping wind and diatomaceous earth where the yields are tiny and the wines come out laser-focused. Twelve months in 90% neutral oak, so nothing stands between you and the vineyard.

Jeb Dunnuck
99 Points
“The 2023 Pinot Noir Radian Vineyard is going to flirt with perfection and is an absolutely riveting Pinot Noir in the making. Coming from clearly one of the Grand Cru vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills, it has a beautiful nose of pure red and black fruits that turns more meaty, mineral-laced, and peppery with air. A focused, elegant mouthfeel, flawless overall balance, and a great, great finish.”
Wine Advocate
97 Points
“My nod as the most multidimensional wine in The Hilt's portfolio. The palate combines outrageous density with a spry, silken texture, seamlessly slingshotting into a vibrant, staining and succulent finish that lingers endlessly. This is a reference point for the region.— Matthew Luczy (Nov 2025)

Desafio means defiance, which is what it took to plant Cabernet on soil everyone said was unfit for grapes. Twenty months in 75% new French oak. Structured to run fifteen years, and Decanter compares it to a rockstar arriving in a tailored suit.

Vinous Media

Another seriously beautiful, vivid wine from Jonata. Vibrant red-toned fruit, spice, cedar, tobacco and orange peel all open in the bouquet. On the palate, the 2022 is quite a bit more reticent. That's probably a good thing for its long-term prospects. I would not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon.— Antonio Galloni (Aug 2024)

Eleven months in French oak, then five more in stainless on full lees, which is where the tension comes from. Chalk, saline, lemon oil and warm pastry crust. Jeb Dunnuck's verdict is the one that matters: a brilliant White Burgundy character.

Vinous Media

“The 2023 Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard is magnificent. Explosive in its aromatics and commanding in its presence, this is California Chardonnay at its most singular. “The 2020 Fenix, nearly all Merlot for the very first time, is one of the finest wines I have ever tasted from Jonata. Dark, rich and bursting with pure unbridled energy, the Fenix is shaping up to be tremendous. Black cherry, licorice, chocolate and new leather saturate the palate. The 2020 is so impressive. The Bottom Line
One winemaker, twelve wines, two very different price tags.

The four Paring wines are $28.97 and we re-order them constantly, so there is no reason to ration yourself. Take a mixed case and keep the Chardonnay and the Rose cold.

The eight Jonata and Hilt flagships are the opposite: allocated, finite, and down to single-digit counts on every one. When the 99-point Radian is gone at four bottles, it is gone.

Cheers,

— James Tran
