The Wine
Old-Vine Heritage Clones.

Kistler's Sonoma Mountain plantings sit on a hillside bench perfectly suited for world-class Chardonnay — interlaced with the rare combination of red volcanic and fine-grained chalky soils. The vineyards are planted to California Heritage clones selected over the last 30 years to ripen to Kistler's balanced wine standards. Some of the oldest Chardonnay vines in Sonoma County.
All Kistler Chardonnays come from one proprietary, heritage California selection that brings low yields, tiny berries, great concentration of both flavor and texture, and naturally low pH with high acids. Yields run just 2.5 to 3 tons per acre — deliberately small to concentrate everything into the glass.
Annually one of Kistler's earliest pickings, the Sonoma Mountain bottling is driven by a grounded, focused mineral core, lifted by ethereal tones of vibrant light fruit raised at elevation. In the winery's words: a wine "decidedly Sonoma Mountain in character."

The 2024 vintage has not yet been formally reviewed at the time of release. The Sonoma Mountain bottling has earned 94–96 points across recent vintages from Suckling, Vinous, and Wine Advocate. Critic notes for the 2024 will land over the coming months.
