Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2024 — the Burgundian-style, volcanic-soil rosato that lives on Michelin wine lists from Rome to New York. JS 94 · DM 92 · VM 91. At Artisan for $29.97.

Dear Wine Lover,

There is one rosé in the wine world that gets reached for whenever someone wants to settle the "rosé can be serious" argument: Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé. Provence, 1843, Mourvèdre-led, structured, ageworthy, the wine sommeliers buy by the case to drink themselves. Today there is finally a wine on the Mediterranean's other shore that drinks in exactly that register.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2024 is grown on the northern slope of Mount Etna at 600 to 900 meters elevation, in vineyards built on 500,000 years of volcanic eruptions — black pumice, lava rock, volcanic ash, and almost nothing else. The grape is Nerello Mascalese, the dark, perfumed Sicilian native that critics routinely compare to Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Production is Burgundian too: organic farming, 10–15 days of maceration, malolactic, 18 months in oak before bottling. Only 2,750 cases made per year, worldwide.

You'll find it on the wine lists at Michelin-starred restaurants from Rome to Manhattan. At Artisan, it's $29.97 — about a quarter of what a serious Bandol commands. And we're rounding it out with seven of our other favorite Mt Etna and Sicily picks below.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosato 2024

Tenuta delle Terre Nere · Mount Etna

Etna Rosato DOC 2024

Sicily, Italy · 90% Nerello Mascalese, 10% Nerello Cappuccio

Northern-slope Etna fruit from vines aged 25 to 60 years, planted between 600 and 900 meters elevation in the townships of Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia. The volcanic ash and black pumice soil yields dramatic temperature swings between day and night — the same conditions that give Etna's reds their famously Burgundy-like fineness. Certified organic. Fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel to preserve the volcanic minerality. Annual production: 2,750 nine-liter cases, worldwide.

94 Points · James Suckling

"Complex, very floral and slightly smoky, this shows leesy character and a well-packed palate. Medium-bodied, it has silky texture and weight with a smoky, mineral finish. From organically grown grapes."

92 Points · Decanter Magazine

"Showing really well, this Etna Rosato has some creamy cherry imbued with spice and salinity. Fresh and sapid on the finish, it's a lip-smacking, light and easy rosé."

91 Points · Vinous · Eric Guido

"Dusty and floral, the 2024 Etna Rosato lifts up with a delicate mix of peach, ripe melon and minty herbs. It's juicy in character with crisp white cherry-berry tones that resonate. The 2024 tapers off with a gentle tension as hints of wild strawberry slowly fade."

Rosato IGT 2022

100% Nerello Mascalese · ~50% ungrafted · VM 91 (2021)

Massimiliano Calabretta makes wine, in his own words, "like Bartolo Mascarello" — a hardcore traditionalist working with 70 to 80-year-old vines, much of it ungrafted, organically farmed. Deep translucent red color, black lava-rock minerality, dried cherries, citrus tension, almost a Nebbiolo-like silhouette. A rosato that drinks like a serious red.

Donnafugata · Pantelleria

"Ben Ryé" Passito di Pantelleria 2023 [375ml]

Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) · the island of Pantelleria

The literal "child of the wind" — Zibibbo grown in the volcanic, wind-swept soils of Pantelleria, the tiny island between Sicily and Tunisia. Some of the vines are over 100 years old and ungrafted, having survived phylloxera. The grapes are dried in the sun, then pressed in batches and married to fresh must over a month-long fermentation. Aged 5 months in steel and 8+ months in bottle. The best-seller of every Artisan masterclass tasting, year after year.

94+ Points · Vinous · Eric Guido

"Exotic yet remarkably fresh, the 2023 Ben Ryé bursts from the glass with a seductive blend of white raisins, minty herbs, poached peaches and tropical citrus. It is weighty, rich and harmonious throughout, coming across as sweet but not cloyingly so. Ultra-ripe pit fruit combines with candied lemon and a crisp mineral tinge that adds form toward the close. Dramatically long, the 2023 leaves a resonance of sour melon and an air of confectionary spice while cleaning up well, leaving the palate completely refreshed."
