Château Latour à Pomerol 2017 — Pétrus' sibling estate, farmed by J.P. Moueix since 1962

View From the Cellar · John Gilman

“Since 1962, the wines at Latour à Pomerol have been utterly classic examples of the commune, with pure, succulent and plummy fruit, coupled to lovely soil tones, often a nice dollop of chocolate, plenty of cigar-oriented nuances, and with enough bottle age, loads of black truffles in the personality of the wines.

It is probably right up there with estates such as Château l'Evangile, Château La Conseillante and Château Certan de May, to place it in its proper context of top domaines in the commune.”

Dear Wine Lover,

Most serious Bordeaux collectors have heard of Château Pétrus. Many have heard of Le Pin, of Trésor-tier sibling Trôtanoy, of cult Pomerols like Hosanna and L'Eglise Clinet. Far fewer realize that the same hands behind Pétrus and Trôtanoy — the Jean-Pierre Moueix family, the dynasty that has quietly run Pomerol from a discreet office in Libourne for nearly a century — also farm a 7.5-hectare plot on the Pomerol plateau called Château Latour à Pomerol.

They have done so since 1962. Sixty-three vintages. Same family. Same vineyard team. Same uncompromising winemaking standards as Pétrus itself. The estate was originally acquired in 1917 by Madame Loubatthe same person who owned Pétrus — and the entire vineyard is just steps from Pétrus on the Pomerol plateau, planted on the same diversity of gravel, clay, and loam soils that produce the most famous Merlot in the world.

The 2017 vintage of Latour à Pomerol just hit a sweet spot virtually every other top Pomerol of the vintage has not: it is drinking right now. Wine Advocate's review window opens 2022. Wine Spectator says 2022 through 2038. Vinous: 2025 through 2047. Five major critics scored it 93 to 94. And the scarcity is real: only 2,000 cases were made for the entire planet — twenty-four bottles of which remain in our cellar.

94 Points · Vinous · Antonio Galloni · Drink 2025–2047

"The 2017 Latour à Pomerol is a gorgeous wine that is at once deep and yet also super-expressive in its bouquet. Sweet tobacco, dried herbs, mint, pepper and spice give the 2017 striking aromatic presence to play off a core of ripe red cherry fruit. Medium in body yet wonderfully deep and fleshy, the 2017 has so much to offer."

93+ Points · Robert Parker's Wine Advocate · Drink 2022–2047

"Deep garnet-purple in color and composed of 100% Merlot, the 2017 Latour à Pomerol leaps from the glass with expressive scents of baked plums, warm black cherries and boysenberries with wafts of fallen leaves, bouquet garni and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating, muscular black fruits with a firm backbone of rounded tannins and a long, minerally finish."

93 Points · Wine Spectator · Drink 2022–2038

"Inviting, with incense and warm plum aromas leading the way, followed by velvet-textured blackberry and fig fruit flavors. Ganache, tobacco and warm earth notes fill in through the finish, melding nicely with the fruit. 2,000 cases made."

P.S. The 2017 was a difficult vintage in Bordeaux — spring frost famously cut yields by half across the Right Bank. But Latour à Pomerol's plot on the high plateau came through with full ripeness, and the wine is now showing exactly what Gilman promised: classic plum, chocolate, cigar, the first hints of truffle. A bottle of Pétrus' DNA at 3% of the price. Text 650-880-3553 for a multi-bottle inquiry.
