A Personal Note
Dear Artisans,
In June I wrote to you about the 2023 Evening Land Seven Springs Pinot Noir. Since then two more critics have weighed in. Decanter gave it 94: “Pinot Noir that exhibits an exhilarating alpine character.” James Suckling gave it 94: “Deep and complex… a long and racy finish.” That puts three of the world’s major critics at 94 on the same bottle.
Seven Springs is one of the historic vineyards of Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills, planted in the early 1980s and farmed biodynamically.
The Team Behind It
Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman, the team behind Domaine de la Côte and Sandhi in California, took over Evening Land in 2014, and the 2023 is from their years together. In the documentary SOMM III, their Domaine de la Côte 2014 Bloom’s Field tied for first in a blind tasting of Pinot Noir with a Volnay Premier Cru from Marquis d’Angerville. That is the bar they set for themselves.
Wine Spectator’s Top 100
Wine Spectator has put Evening Land on its Top 100 three times: the 2007 Seven Springs Pinot Noir at No. 97 in 2009; the 2012 La Source Pinot Noir at 98 points and No. 3 in 2015, which Wine Spectator called “Oregon’s highest-scoring wine to date”; and the 2018 Seven Springs Chardonnay at No. 27 in 2021. The 2023 Pinot has the scores to ask whether a fourth is coming.
Why It Tastes Like Burgundy
Sixteen months in neutral French oak, then finished in concrete, at 13.1% alcohol. Wine Advocate: “The medium-bodied palate has a silky texture and is bursting with berry and citrus flavors. It’s balanced by mouthwatering acidity and has a long, bright finish.” Light on its feet, vivid, transparent: Oregon Pinot in the Burgundian mold, at $34.99.

Showing verve and expression, this opens with a burst of raspberry and guava flavors laced with crushed stone, dusky spices and forest floor as this builds complexity toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2035. 1,900 cases made.
Decanter
94 Points
Pinot Noir that exhibits an exhilarating alpine character. Fresh pine tips, chopped mint and ocean air brighten an array of blue fruits. There is an intensity on the palate, with crisp and crunchy blue fruits and early-season Oregon blackberries tipping into mint, sea salt, and wild alpine meadow herbs. A delightfully elegant Pinot Noir that showcases the classic Eola-Amity spice.
James Suckling
94 Points
Deep and complex, this pinot offers aromas of ripe cherries, pomegranate skin, dried blood oranges and red spices. Clean and focused, it has a medium body with a very fine, seamless textured and juicy acidity. Bright and fresh, it shows lively, delicious fruit and a long and racy finish. Drink or hold.
Wine Enthusiast · Michael Alberty
93 Points
A really ripe and sweet blackcap raspberry aroma is counterpointed by tangy bits of lemon verbena, mint and a fresh wood scent… The fruit on the lighter-bodied wine’s palate is a mix of mulberries and elderberries that meld with flavors of dark chocolate ganache and orange zest. There’s plenty of acidity and velvety tannins here to offer support for all of that fruit.
Wine Advocate
92 Points
Matured in used French oak, the 2023 Pinot Noir Seven Springs Vineyard is scented of dried red cherries and cranberries plus wafts of orange, earth and dried flowers. The medium-bodied palate has a silky texture and is bursting with berry and citrus flavors. It’s balanced by mouthwatering acidity and has a long, bright finish. 1,900 cases produced.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Seven Springs wafts up like a basket of freshly picked wild berries mixed with minty herbs and autumnal spice. It feels round, delivering a silken wave of ripe red and blue fruits that swirl beneath an air of chalk dust and lavender. The finish is medium length with gentle chewiness yet remains incredibly fresh.
