Under Cambie's guidance, Clos Saint Jean achieved some of the highest scores ever awarded in the appellation. The 2020 Vieilles Vignes received 95 points from Wine Spectator and was named #12 Wine of the World for 2023 — rooted in the same La Crau vineyard that produces Vieux Télégraphe, at a fraction of the price. Philippe Cambie's Penultimate Chapter — and a Terroir That Changed Everything
This historic property helped change Châteauneuf-du-Pape forever when it began bottling estate wines in 1900 — before the appellation itself was created in 1923. Considered by critics and wine-writers as the preeminent estate espousing the modern style in Châteauneuf, Clos Saint Jean is one of the oldest cellars in the region. At its helm for the most celebrated years was Philippe Cambie — a winemaker who built a reputation for the highest-scoring wines in the southern Rhône, passing away in 2021.
The Vieilles Vignes is drawn primarily from the La Crau lieu-dit — the same celebrated terroir that produces Vieux Télégraphe, one of the most coveted Châteauneuf-du-Papes in the world. La Crau's distinctive galets roulés (large, heat-retaining river stones) over clay and limestone create a wine of great concentration and structure. The estate also holds a small parcel of Mourvèdre in the Bois-Dauphin lieu-dit near Château Rayas, planted in sandy, limestone-rich soils.
Farming at Clos Saint Jean is fully sustainable — the warm, dry Châteauneuf climate eliminates the need for chemical inputs, and Vincent and Pascal employ organic methods for pest control. All of this care shows in wines of extraordinary purity and elegance. The 50–100 year-old vines produce small yields of intensely concentrated fruit. The result: wines that genuinely age for two decades.
