Description

2011 Vintage - Ranked #4 on the Top 100 Wines of 2015 - James Suckling

About the Winery:
Montes is the maker of Alpha M, Folly, Purple Angel and more; this winery BEAT Opus One, First Growth Bordeaux Haut-Brion, Chateau Montelena and Sassicaia in Blind Tastings!

Here is what Robert Parker's Wine Advocate had to say about this winery:

"Chile has made enormous progress in recent years. At present, this South American country produces wines that can satisfy any consumer's desires, from cheap quaffing wines to world-class age worthy reds."
- Jay Miller, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Oct. 2008)

Montes Folly is a pure Syrah grown on the very steepest slopes of the winery's "la Finca de Apalta" vineyard, in Apalta Valley, with an inclination exceeding 45°. These high reaches are home to the superb grapes that become Montes Folly, Chile's first ultra-premium Syrah.

Notes from the Winemaker:
The 2011–2012 season presented very scant rain due to the “La Niña” phenomenon. The spring was very cold but frost-free, which was perfect for optimal foliage growth, flowering, fruit set, and cluster definition. The summer was dry and clear, without the cold and cloudy days of the previous season.

Terroir:
The grapes for Montes Folly grow on the steepest hillsides of our Finca de Apalta, where the vines have best adapted. There they reach a good balance between vegetative expression and crop load, resulting in low yields with highly concentrated grapes. This year’s grapes were leisurely picked between March 27 and April 23.
