About the Winery:
Craggy Range is a family owned winery established in 1997 named by U.S publication Wine Enthusiast magazine as New World Winery of the Year for 2014. It is situated in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in the premium wine growing area of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand. Based on the single vineyard philosophy of winemaking, Craggy Range was the first in the Southern Hemisphere to make single vineyard wines from multiple New Zealand regions with grape varieties matched to place.
The grapes, grown in exceptional winery-owned New Zealand estate vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough, are selected for their special soils and unique climates producing wines of character, quality and authority.
Winemaker Notes:
Te Kahu means 'the cloak' in te reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata. This is a wine of richness and an abundance of black fruit flavours and a long structured finish.
Tasting Notes:
Deepest crimson red. Brooding aromatically with notes of cassis, black olive and dried tobacco enveloping a dense core of blue fruits. The wine has a lovely focus on the palate with dark fruits framed by fine tannins to deliver a classical structure with an excellent future ahead.
-
“Inviting aromas of sliced plums, black cherries, graphite and lead pencil. Medium- to full-bodied with silky, structured tannins. Linear on the palate, with crushed stone minerality giving definition and freshness to the black fruit. Vibrant and bright. This can age but is already so attractive now. 69% merlot, 13% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc, 4% malbec and 4% petit verdot. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” (Sep 2022)
90 Points - Vinous Media:
“The 2020 Te Kahu Gimblett Gravels Vineyard is a mid-weight, balanced Bordeaux with supple, silky fruit reminiscent of black currant pastilles, and a graphite lift. On occasion, the bony soils and the not-always-dry harvest periods have made a Te Kahu that is a little lean, but this 69% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cab Franc, with a splash of Petit Verdot and Malbec completing the picture, doesn’t have that issue in 2020. The dry, warm season has made a style that’s light to mid-weight while the core is soft and ripe. The tannins remain structured and have the Gravels’ distinctive stony texture.” – Rebecca Gibb MW (Apr 2022)
