About the Winery:
The Liger-Belair family has passed down the tradition of winemaking from generation to generation for the past 250 years. In 2001, Thibault Liger-Belair took over the vines as the winemaker and created Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair. Prior to joining the family domaine, Thibault studied viticulture and oenology for six years, and worked for a communications firm in Paris where he was able to present and taste wines internationally. In his mid-twenties, Thibault also started an internet company with the idea of discovering and selling high quality wines. But the calling of the vines was still strong, so in 2001, at the age of 26, Thibault decided to jump to the other side of the fence, this time to make wine, his true calling and passion. The year 2002 was the first harvest of the Nuits-Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Charmottes, as well as Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas. In 2003, the domaine enriched its range with Richebourg Grand Cru, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Petits Monts, and Bourgogne Rouge. In 2009, the domaine expanded into Beaujolais, and now a Beaujolais-Villages and several Moulin-à-Vent Cru wines are also produced. Vines are certified organic and farmed biodynamically.
LOCATION This cuvée is a blend of Beaujolais and Bourgogne, of Gamay and Pinot Noir to be precise. This explains the name, “Les Deux Terres”, meaning “The Two Lands”. This combination results in a wine with the finesse and distinction of Pinot Noir and the delicious indulgence of Gamay.
TERROIR Every year, we select the best grapes from the different estates with which we work, before deciding on the blending of our Beaujolais, Burgundy Pinot Noir and Hautes Côte de Nuits terroirs. With each vintage, we change the blend of these wines depending on the quality of the harvest. Our sole objective is to produce the best blend with the best balance between Gamay and Pinot Noir.
WINEMAKING The harvest is manual and followed by skin maceration for a week with a long pressing of 8 hours. The aging is carried out in oak barrels (no new barrels) for a period of 15 months.
GRAPE VARIETY Gamay 85%, Pinot Noir 15%
Ratings & Reviews
Jasper Morris' Inside Burgundy (2020):
"85% of the blend is gamay from the Beaujolais crus of Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent and Morgon, supplemented by 15% pinot noir from the Côte d’Or. Rich black purple, considerable power here, but some grace as well. A little bit reductive. Plenty of guts here, vibrant fruit, not too acid and very long." (Nov 2021)
