About the Winery:
Giacomo Rallo, the fourth generation of a family with over 170 years of experience in quality wine, founded Donnafugata in 1983 together with his wife Gabriella. Today, their children José and Antonio lead the company and a team of people focused on excellence.

In eastern Sicily, on the northern slope of Mount Etna, Donnafugata has 86 acres of vineyards with native grapes such as Carricante and Nerello Mascalese; in the territory of Vittoria DOC, the latest generation winery is surrounded by 103 acres of Nero d’Avola and Frappato.

About the Wine:
DIALOGUE WITH THE ART: A volcano goddess stands out on the label. Her intense colors - red, yellow, shimmering black - are those of the highest active volcano in Europe. An ancient, powerful, feminine divinity: "the Mountain" as the locals call Etna. Sul Vulcano is a declaration of love: a pure wine that conveys the energy of this unique place located in the middle of the Mediterranean.

Winemaking Notes:
Fermentation in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for 8-10 days at a temperature of 25°C. Aging partly in tanks and partly in French oak (second and third passage barriques) for 12 months and then at least 10 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes:
Pale ruby red, Sul Vulcano offers an elegant bouquet with notes of red fruits (raspberries and cherries) along with hints of fresh balsamic mint and delicate spicy nuances of star anise. The palate is fresh and with a good structure, full of silky tannins, and with a balanced and persistent finish.

Technical Info:
Grapes: Nerello Mascalese, the main red grape variety native of Etna, and a small percentage of Nerello Cappuccio.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Vinous:
The 2022 Etna Rosso Sul Vulcano lifts from the glass with floral perfumes complicated by shavings of blood orange and crushed wild berries. This is juicy and energetic with crisp red fruits that swirl across a crunchy mineral core. Long and gently tannic, the 2022 tapers off with edgy tannins offset by a bump of residual acidity and hints of blackcurrant linger on. I love how the Sul Volcano is both fun and serious.

90 Points - Wine Spectator:
"A creamy red, with dried cherry and strawberry fruit flavors and hints of rooibos tea, vanilla and blood orange peel underscored by subtle notes of loamy earth and iron. Fresh and balanced, with light, chalky tannins firming the plush finish. Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Drink now through 2032. 11,750 cases made, 400 cases imported." – Alison Napjus (Apr 2026)
