About the Winery:
Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch is a historic, world-renowned 12-generation German winery located in Bernkastel-Kues along the Mosel River, famous for producing elite, 100% Riesling wines from the legendary Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard. Following the death of Dr. H. Thanisch (at only age 28), his widow took control of the estate, thus adding the Wwe. (witwe, or widow) to its name.

About this Wine:
From 50-100 year old vines planted on steep, slate-rich hillsides above Bernkastel-Kues comes this expression of pure Mosel terroir. The blue and black slate soils impart distinctive minerality and flinty precision that defines this wine's character. The 2021 shows hallmark freshness and purity with racy acidity and complexity built to develop gracefully in cellar. Classic German Riesling from a family with 375 years of winemaking tradition.

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - James Suckling:
"A surprisingly round and generous dry riesling for the challenging 2021 vintage. Nice creaminess and some positive tannins on the mid-palate are married to rather elegant and mineral acidity that nicely lifts the finish. The yellow-apple aroma in the nose should expand with further aging. Drink or hold. Screw cap." (Nov 2022)

90 Points - Wine Advocate:
"Almost entirely from Kues and bottled in April with 11% stated alcohol and 11 grams of unfermented sugar, the 2021 Bernkastel-Kues Alte Reben shows clear, deep, intense as well as elegant, ripe fruit on the nose. Round and filigreed on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, fine and elegant Riesling with charming roundness and an elegant, aromatic finish. The acidity is precise, crystalline and saline, but the wine is still very young. Screw cap. Tasted at the domaine in Kues in July 2022." – Stephan Reinhardt (Aug 2022)
