The Property:
The E. Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, in Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over in 1961. Today, the 3rd generation, Marcel’s son Philippe, continues the legacy and values of this iconic family house in the Rhône Valley.
With vineyards in Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, and Crozes-Hermitage, the E. Guigal estate oversees a mosaic of vineyards located in numerous appellations that form a range of wines of impeccable quality.
Over the vintages, the E. Guigal house has experienced strong development, notably becoming the owner in 1995 of the famous Château d’Ampuis, as well as several wine estates (Jean-Louis Grippat, Domaine de Vallouit, Domaine de Bonserine and Château de Nalys, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape).
The Vineyard:
Guigal’s Vignes de l’Hospice is one of the finest sites in the Northern Rhone Valley. Guigal now owns the majority of this steeply terraced vineyard. Guigal is often asked when they will produce a fourth “LaLa,” and their response is that their fourth single vineyard phenomenon of the Northern Rhone is already being produced: the Vignes de l’Hospice.
Vinified in the same fashion as their Côte Rôtie crus and Ermitage Ex Voto, this wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with traditional pumpovers. The wine is then aged for 30 months in 100% new oak barrels, clarified by racking only, and bottled unfiltered.
Tasting Note:
This wine’s complex aromas are dominated by black fruit and a delicate oak sensation. The round and elegant tannins of the powerful palate characterize this unique wine, with all the finesse of its appellation and the strength of its neighbor Hermitage.
Ratings & Reviews
96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"Deep purple-hued, the 2022 Saint Joseph Vignes De L'Hospice offers a sensational nose of crème de cassis, scorched earth, liquid violets, and bouquet garni, with a wonderful gamey, classic Northern Rhône Syrah character. It's medium to full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with sweet tannins, nicely integrated oak, and a great finish. This is a brilliant, seamless, sexy example of this cuvée that already offers pleasure yet will see its 20th birthday in fine form. Drink 2026-2046." (Feb 2026)
95 Points - Wine Advocate:
"The 2022 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice is textural and concentrated, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, mulberries, flowers, spices and gentian mingled with delicate oaky notes. Medium- to full-bodied, broad and dense, with a seamless, layered core of fruit, it concludes with a long, perfumed finish. Keep it for 8–10 years before pulling the cork." - Yohan Castaing (Nov 2025)
94 Points - James Suckling:
"A very spicy and quite toasty St. Jospeh with excellent concentration on the focused, medium-bodied palate. A serious structure, but it’s only moderately dry, the tannins building to a crescendo in the firm finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026." (Apr 2025)
93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Saint-Joseph Vignes de l'Hospice unfolds first into pronounced graphite dust, shy blackberry, dried herbs and cedar wood. Medium-bodied, concentrated and expressive, the 2022 is an outstanding Vignes de l'Hospice, culminating with remarkably refined tannins and rounded mouthfeel on the long finale." - Nicolas Greincher (Jan 2026)
93 Points - Wine Spectator:
"A modern-style St.-Jo, featuring ripe plum, licorice and fig cake enrobed with a flattering brush of toasted cedar oak. Streaming and rich with impressive intensity, this will have many fans. Focused, with tangy precision on the persistent finish, marked by smoldering graphite, chewy chocolate, violet and spices. Drink now through 2040. 40 cases imported." - Kristen Bieler (Feb 2026)
92 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Aromas of earthy blackcurrant, with generous oak spice, cola and clove. It has good acidity and brightness, and no overextraction. An interesting mix between light freshness of fruit, energy and intense oak spice, suggesting this will age with interest. From good terroir in a heavily oaked style. Aged for 30 months in new oak barriques. Certified Haute Valeur Environnementale." - Matt Walls (Apr 2025)
