About the Winery:
Haynes Vineyard is a single-vineyard, single-estate winery, owned by the Lawrence family - only the third family to own the vineyard, having purchased it from the Whitford/Haynes family, who bought it from Napa City founder Nathan Coombs in the late 19th century. In 1967, the Haynes family granted André Tchelistcheff permission to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines, now the oldest in Napa Valley. The three expressions of Chardonnay from the site reflect its terroir, its story, and the people who define its character: what we grow – Vigneron, what we make – Forgeron, and what we love – Corazon.

About this Wine:
A pure expression of Syrah, this wine is all about the terroir following the tradition of great Syrahs of Rhone. The wines are naturally fermented, gently pressed, and aged in neutral foudre. Beautiful denseness and texture without the expression of over-ripe character.

Ratings & Reviews

98 Points - James Suckling:
"This is really wonderful and pure with white pepper, red berries, hibiscus, orange blossom and hints of sliced Wagyu beef. Medium body, integrated fine tannins that are wonderfully melted into the wine. Firm and framed finish. Subtle and so very sophisticated." (Nov 2023)

97 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Such an expressive wine with an attractive, perfumed nose of pure black cherry and blackberry fruit, accented by violets, white pepper, hints of sage, leather, unsmoked tobacco, and white truffle charcuterie. The wine is focused and precise on the palate, with ironstone minerality and superfine tannins that have a subtle elliptical quality—pinpoint edges with more generosity at the core, framing all that delicate yet ripe fruit. It carries a super-juicy appeal, finishing with tremendous length, tension, energy, and drive. For Carlton McCoy, this wine recalls some of the exceptional Cornas Syrahs he loves. Regardless of what it evokes, this is one of the most stylish and structured Syrahs in Napa today. A playful expression of cool-climate Napa Syrah, it undergoes 12 months of élevage with 'Zero Percent New Oak', as boldly stated on the label—100% whole cluster, with no sulphur added until bottling. The Haynes Vineyard Syrah vines, planted in 1996 and 2000, are aged in 500-litre neutral oak barrels and 1,500-litre casks. Lawrence Wine Estates CEO Carlton McCoy brought in winemaker Nico Cueva (formerly of Kosta Browne) to lead Haynes, offering him a blank canvas to shape this Burgundian-focused programme in the heart of the Coombsville AVA." - Jonathan Cristaldi (Feb 2025)

95 Points - The Wine Independent:
"The 2022 Syrah Forgeron is pale to medium garnet-purple in color. Notes of violets, Bing cherries, black raspberries, and tar jump from the glass, followed by hints of garrigue, moss, and cardamom with a waft of black pepper. The medium-bodied palate vibrates with energetic red and black berry layers, with firm rounded tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing long and perfumed. This was made with 100% whole cluster fermentation and no new oak." – LPB (Aug 2024)

94 Points - Wine Advocate:
"All whole-cluster, no new oak—and larger formats (500-liter and 1,500-liter casks)—means the 2022 Syrah shows wonderful purity and varietal character, with violets, herbs and cracked pepper accenting cherries on the expressive nose, which is somewhat reminiscent of a fine Saint-Joseph. In the mouth, the wine is medium to full-bodied, expansive yet focused, with a silky texture and hints of black olive emerging on the long, softly dusty finish."" – Joe Czerwinski (Jul 2024)

94 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Syrah Forgeron is a gorgeous, elegant wine. Silky tannins, lifted aromatics and bright red-toned fruit grace this enticing Syrah. The 2022 was done with 100% stems and aged in 500-liter and 1,000-liter casks, all neutral, for ten months. There's a sense of inner sweetness here that is so alluring. This is one of the most compelling and distinctive Syrahs in Northern California." – Antonio Galloni (Dec 2024)

92 Points - Wine Spectator:
"Well-knit and elegantly layered, with appealing raspberry, fresh violet and savory pepper flavors that glide toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2032. 526 cases made." – Tim Fish (Aug 2024)
