About the Producer:
In Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, where the integrity of the producer is often more important than a renowned appellation or vineyard, Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most venerable, most trusted and revered wine houses. Jadot’s winemaking team, now led by Technical Director Frédéric Barnier, has maintained a balance of tradition and technology in winemaking that allows Jadot’s wines to express the subtle differences between terroirs that are the essence of fine Burgundy. Though officially retired in 2013, esteemed winemaker Jacques Lardière continues to work in an advisory role and on special projects.

Founded in 1859, the house has grown through a long-term policy of acquisition or management of exceptional vineyard lands and owns 528 acres of vineyards, including nearly 280 acres of the Cote d’Or’s most prestigious Premier and Grand Cru plots.

Ratings & Reviews

97 Points - Wine Review Online:
"Maison Louis Jadot, one of Burgundy’s best négociants, is a major grower, owning, through their various estates, over 300 acres of vineyards in the Côte d’Or. Clos des Ursules was the first vineyard Maison Louis Jadot acquired two hundred years ago, in 1826. The French wine authorities awarded Clos des Ursules, which was formerly included in the Vignes Franches 1er Cru, its own 1er Cru status in 2011 because of the distinctive quality of the wine. The sensational 2022 is still, inexplicably given its stature, widely available. Frédéric Barnier, Jadot’s winemaker, using an Olympic analogy, believes the 2022 should be “on the podium.” I believe it deserves a gold. It was marvelous when I initially tasted in Jadot’s cellars in 2023 and has just gotten better with more complexity and elegance each of the several times I’ve tasted since then. Though nicely concentrated – yet not overdone – it impresses with its elegance and silky texture. It displays the magical combination of power and elegance. Having just been lucky to be included in a tasting of 30 vintages of Clos des Ursules, back to the 1926, this is a wine that develops and evolves beautifully, so, as delicious as it is now, there is no rush to drink the 2022. It will develop with the best of them." -Michael Apstein (Jul 2026)

96 Points - James Suckling:
"A big, rounded and generous wine that wraps fine-grained tannins around gorgeous red and black fruit on a full body. Clos des Ursules is a monople of Jadot’s and one of the vineyards they have used for generations. Opens with spicy cinnamon, cloves and toast, then vivid raspberries, red plums and mint on the palate. Drink or hold." (Jun 2024)

93-95 Points - Jasper Morris:
"Fresh purple of medium depth. Much the liveliest bouquet with its concentration of raspberries, very complete and absolutely delicious. The finish continues gorgeously, this will make a beautiful bottle with a little patience. This Clos des Ursules shows the classic peacock’s fantail of aromatics. Drink from 2030-2038." (Oct 2023)

95 Points, Rank #95 Top 100 2025 - Wine Spectator:
"Pure and bursting with energy and tension, this red's cherry, blackberry, floral and mineral flavors are locked tight today. Nonetheless, this offers terrific balance and intensity, with just a hint of oak spice. The long, resonant aftertaste is driven by vibrant acidity. Shows excellent potential. Best from 2029 through 2047. 200 cases imported." -Bruce Sanderson (Jul 2025)

92-94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, spices and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with sweet, powdery tannins and a long, spicy finish, this site, an enclave in Vignes Franches that's one of the house's emblematic wines, always performs well. Winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team have produced another strong portfolio chez Jadot, with a relatively abundant crop of charming, pure and demonstrative wines, with alcohol back in more normal territory after the highs of 2018, 2019 and 2020. As I've written before, in the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pièces, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. A cold room also helps chill down any fruit that's too warm when it enters the winery. 2022 is also the second vintage of organic conversion for the Domaine Louis Jadot and the Domaine Gagey." -William Kelley (Jan 2024)

92 Points - Burghound:
"Here the elegant and wonderfully spicy nose offers up its layered blend of ripe red berries, soft earth and hint of oak. The rich and beautifully textured middle weight flavors are blessed with refined tannins and fine length on the youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is lovely and sufficiently firm to reward up to a decade of keeping. Drink starting 2032." -Allen Meadows (Apr 2025)

92 Points - Decanter:
"Jadot's Clos des Ursules was a bit of a disappointment in 2022 – it seems to lack a bit of the ripeness that it enjoyed in 2020; there is an appropriate raspberry fruit and complexity from hints of violets, eucalyptus, and earth, but there Is none of the heady complexity and fruit of the 2020 vintage. The wine has abundant extract on the palate, giving the wine complexity and depth. I suggest waiting at least five years to see if this opens up. Drinking Window: 2027-2055." -Charles Curtis MW (Nov 2023)

92 Points - Vinous Media:
"The 2022 Beaune Clos des Ursules 1er Cru has quite a gorgeous bouquet with bright Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and plummy scents, fruit-forward (of course), yet well defined and showing no sign of heat. The palate is medium-bodied with a splash of balsamic on the entry, gentle grip and hints of graphite on the mid-palate, leading to a controlled and quite persistent finish. Here, there is just a little VA, but it complements the wine as a whole. Afford this another three or four years in bottle. Tasted at the Clos des Ursules vertical at the Jadot winery in Beaune. Drinking Window: 2030-2055." -Neal Martin (Jul 2026)
